Alcohol, painkiller blamed for hotel executive's death

LAS VEGAS SUN

A medical examiner concluded Monday that a 33-year-old Green Valley Ranch Station executive's death last month was caused by an overdose of a powerful painkiller and alcohol.

The Clark County coroner's office ruled that Michael John Tata's death was accidental. Tata had fentanyl in his system, which a pharmacist described as an opiate more powerful than Oxycontin or morphine.

"It's a really, really strong pain reliever and it would be used to treat cancer pain, any kind of extreme pain," said Jack Paige, an inspector-investigator and pharmacist with the Nevada State Board of Pharmacy. "If you get your teeth pulled, you're not going to get this."

Fentanyl comes in three forms: a lozenge on a stick, a patch and in liquid form administered intravenously. The lozenge form of the drug in a dose of 1,600 micrograms was found on a nightstand next to Tata's bed, according to the police report.

It's not clear if Tata had a medical condition that would result in pain or if any other drugs were found in his system, but the combination of the fentanyl and alcohol were the only factors in his death, Assistant Coroner John Fudenberg said.

Fudenberg declined to say whether Tata had a prescription for fentanyl, citing confidentiality laws.

However, a Henderson Police investigation, which is ongoing, found Tata did not have a prescription for fentanyl. Police aren't yet certain how Tata obtained the drug, police spokesman Keith Paul said, but it doesn't appear "he has been trying to go around town trying to obtain fentanyl."

Tata's obituary asks for mourners to make donations in his name to Gilda's Club, an international organization that provides emotional and social support to those affected by cancer.

Tata, who was vice president of hotel operations and was prominently featured on "American Casino," the Discovery Channel's reality show based on the resort, was found dead July 6 in his home on the 1100 block of Spago Lane in Henderson.

Dr. Larry Sims, the forensic pathologist who conducted the autopsy, determined Tata's death was accidental "based on the totality of the circumstances, the investigation combined with his findings at the autopsy," as well as the levels of drugs and alcohol found in his body, Fudenberg said.

Fudenberg said he could not release the amount of fentanyl or alcohol in Tata's system. That information is available only to his legal next of kin, he said.

Police reports released Monday noted that officers who responded to the 911 call from Tata's roommate and found a prescription type wrapper for fetanyl 1,600 micrograms on the dresser and an empty fetanyl 1,600 microgram stick in his bedroom.

A rolled up dollar bill was found in the dresser in the bedroom, the report notes.

The report says that one of Tata's two male roommates told police he had been with Tata the afternoon of July 4 and that an unidentified woman had spent the night with Tata.

One of the roommates told police that he had knocked on Tata's bedroom door sometime prior to 3:30 p.m. on July 4 to get the woman to move her car from the driveway so that he could leave for work.

The other roommate told police that he and Tata had made something to eat, then went to Winchell's Pub & Grill at 10620 S. Eastern Ave. in Henderson and that Tata was drinking vodka.

From there they went to a party of a friend of Tata's from the Four Seasons and stayed until approximately 11 p.m. The roommate told police that Tata "had consumed a large amount of vodka during the day."

He said that after they got home Tata went swimming, did laundry and went to bed about midnight.

On the morning of July 6, after not seeing or hearing from Tata since late July 4, one of the roommates went into his room and found him dead.

That roommate "was extremely upset. He advised that Tata had been his best friend his whole life. He advised that he looked in Tata's bedroom on Monday (July 5) and thought that Tata was passed out," according to the police report.

The roommate told police "he didn't know where the fentanyl came from and was reluctant to talk about drug use."

Fentanyl is a respiratory depressant and it is more potent than Oxycontin, Paige said, a drug that has garnered much attention in recent years because it is sometimes used as a recreational street drug. Paige said he has never heard of fentanyl being abused.

Fentanyl can be lethal when combined with alcohol, Paige said. Those taking fentanyl may feel euphoric and drowsy.

A statement issued by Station Casinos on Monday said Tata "was a young man of tremendous promise and great potential and we continue to be saddened by his death."

However, Station Casinos "maintains a strict policy to abstain from public comment regarding any of its employees' private lives even in public matters," according to the statement. "We hope to provide a degree of dignity and privacy for Michael's family."

it's sad that a man such as michael at an early age with so many accomplishments would mess with such a dangerous drug, not to mention consume alcohol all day before his vacation, only to wind up dead,it's a tragic loss not only for his family and friends but for the gaming community as well. as far as the show is concerned all the bickering and other crap, well thats just television, I'm sure they embellish for more entertaining television. for michael his accomplishments speak well of him, he will be missed.

How unexpected it was to be "hooked" by ANY reality show, let alone one that could spark enough interest to pause a channel surfing exercise. I had only been a fan for three weeks when the episode that included the tragic loss of Michael Tata aired. I can't explain the sudden shock and inexplainable sadness that still lingers with his loss...and the empathy I feel for the grieving cohart that lost her "best friend". I've never encountered anyone in the corporate level of management with the business ambience of Michael Tata. Truly, one of the rare professionals that commands respect.

My husband and I are deeply saddened at the loss of Michael Tata of GVR. We have watched the show American Casino since its airing. We were in shock to hear of Michaels passing. Our thoughts are with the family and of the GVR employees that worked with Michael on a daily basis. To Ninya, who said he was her best friend, my thoughts and prayers are definately with you as well.Keep up the good work at GVR. We will continue to watch the show. And hopefully visit Vegas one day.

LOL! This is why you should not take drugs! Unfortunately, this guy did not have any common sense. Perhaps society is better off without him. My thanks to him for not contaminating the gene pool any more than what it is already. May he rest in peace.

"H. Simpson" needs to learn a little bit about humanity. Michael Tata's death is a tragedy, regardless of the circumstances. "Contaminate the gene pool", H. wrote. Well I think *H.'s parents* already did that.

I agree with Otto, there needs to be a little more humanity and sensitivity about another's death. There is a grieving mother who lost her son, regardless of why, a father etc. Get a life and quit getting off to other's pain. I am in the healthcare industry and before I even learned of Mike's unfortunate death I was watching the show and it honestly looked like he was suffering from something, what I do not know but I see a lot of people with the same look as he had, slightly sunken reddish eyes,on this episode where he helped move Inya. He didn't look healthy and probably didn't heed the warnings to avoid alchohol or maybe he knew and didn't want to go through the upcoming pain.

Otto, you hit it right on. H Simpson sounds to be a very cold-hearted individual. The last name is quite fitting to the remarks, tho....must be a relative of the infamous OJ. We occasionally watch the show but were quite shocked to see the tribute to Michael in the ending credits so we immediately went online to find out what happened. As Otto says, the death is a tragedy, regardless of the circumstances. Our thoughts, too, are with his family and fellow employees. He was a cutie pie and he will be missed.

1600mg Fentanyl Lollipos are used to treat breakthrough cancer and AIDS pain before a duragesic patch containing Fentanyl. The drug is 400 times more potent than I.V. Morphine, So I feel it was obvious Michael either had no idea of the potency of the drug, given the rate he imbibed Vodka at, or he had emotional, psychologiacl, or addiction problems that no one knew about to any great extent...He wasn't even 35, what a damn shame for an up and coming executive like him.

i was reading this remembering the time i was haveing a back procedure done(faccett injections) and remembered the Dr. had given me 2 of these lollypops....which i actually thought was rather funny way for pain med. to be dispenced..i was to do the 2 suckers before i went to the surgery.....i did....i drove there, felt not much more than a ''buzz'' had the procedure....felt that quite alot...but anyway, if i drank i could easy see how that medication would not be enough to spin your head around or make you euphoric and cautious of everyday activity........oh and i think H. Simpson was a throw off on homer simpson.....anyway,6 major surgerys later i'm now disabled and have to take a high level of pain med. everyday...which i do not abuse and am able to function with my family and life without a constant feeling of being tore up on meds. but still able to get around and live a better life than without all i have been thru..

i am a 35 year old man who ran a auto dealership in new orleans.i know first hand of the dangers of painkillers.i am a alcholic and drug(VICODEN)addict.i ran a multimillion dollar business, but the stress and long hours took its toll and i became dependant on pills for 5 years drinking at night,.never thinking that it kill me.painkillers are a very addictive drug that you dont know will be your worst nightmare.working 80 hour work weeks and the stress involed there are drugs in those kind of business which when your making big money,$100 dollars a day seems ok.i was a slave too this very dangerous drug.i started taking 1 a day so dont let the cute pill fool you.i am now clean an sober for 204 days and i do it one day at a time.i pray for michaels family and all the follow addicts who were also caught up in this evil web.

Dean, you are so full of chit your eyes are brown. Are you 12? First there is no such drug as VICODEN and I would think if you were addicted to a prescription drug you would be able to SPELL it. Second MANY MANY millions of salaried professionals work 80 hr weeks or greater and have large amounts of job stress and still manage not to abuse alchohol and drugs. Long hours are sometimes a way of combating stress, ie allowing me to get work done and therefore allowing me to sleep at night knowing I don't have unfinished work. I felt from viewing the show that Tata was a wonderfully talented person and his death is tragic.

Dave,i am sorry i offended you,but you CAN be addicted to a drug and not know how to spell it,i am proof.with your theory YOU must not go IN anywhere, because YOU misspelled"IN".what are you 4 or less.all i was saying is there are more people in some businesses;hotel, car sales, restuarts, casinos etc..which we are full of in NEW ORLEANS and in recovery.you don't have to be CHIT(as you spelled it)for you be a ALCOHOLIC/ADDICT.there ARE wonderful, talanted people who are suffering.to sum it up,dave YOU are the DICKHEAD!!!!!

The loss of Michael is a real tragedy. I have watched the show American Casino since the first show and really enjoyed it. I have also been to GVR numerous times and found the hotel to be a truly great place to stay and gamble. People can become addicted to drugs, whether they are prescription or not, very easily and not even know it. My prayers go out to his friends, co-workers and family and I hope they can all get through his loss. I have had several unexpected losses in the last year and it's very hard.
I also had Cancer two years ago and take one day at a time.Hopefully I've been cured but only time will tell.
God Bless and Merry Christmas.
