The latest buzz is about cable companies entering the wireless arena, potentially harnessing the next generation of technology to broadcast to mobile devices.

Comcast Chairman Brian Roberts noted that in Japan and South Korea, video is routinely broadcast to cellular telephones. "That could be the TV of tomorrow" in the United States, he said.

There is a consensus among industry executives that high-speed Internet service via cable modems will continue to be a revenue driver. "I think the prospects for cable have just been exponentially enhanced by the advent of broadband," Time Warner Chairman and CEO Richard Parsons said.

Glenn Britt, president of Time Warner Cable, predicted Monday that it won't be long before more than half of the industry's revenue is generated by businesses other than video.

In the same discussion, Comcast Chief Operating Officer Stephen Burke noted that on-demand video, available whenever viewers want to watch it, is only in the "third or fourth" inning in terms of development. "It allows you to be tremendously creative with the way you deliver video programming," he said.

Underscoring the continuing potential of broadband, Roberts on Tuesday conducted a demonstration of wideband, the next generation of cable-modem service.

Using today's high-speed connections, it would take more than three hours to download all 32 versions of the Encyclopedia Britannica and Merriam-Webster's Visual Dictionary. Over wideband, the data transfer took less than four minutes. "With wideband, we're going to unleash a whole new era" of video, voice and data services, he said.

Industry executives chafed at suggestions that as large corporations, they lack the adaptability of small, agile competitors. "Companies like us, like the ones you see on this stage, have had to learn to grow into the new technologies," Parsons emphasized.

"I agree with what Dick said. This is a world in which the big get bigger," said Peter Chernin, president and COO of News Corp., which owns the popular social-networking site MySpace and which last week sought unsuccessfully to acquire The Wall Street Journal.

He predicted more communications industry consolidation.

Posted by Michael Martinez on May 9, 2007 3:05 PM | Permalink

Copyright 2007 by National Journal Group Inc.

WiFi on the Las Vegas Monorail?

<basefont></basefont>VEGAS' BEST-KEPT SECRETS (A lot of thing still stay here).

Why doesn't the monorail tell people they can get wifi on the trains? text-align: right;">

     By Kenneth Li

LAS VEGAS (Reuters) - Top U.S. satellite TV operator DirecTV Group Inc. plans to announce on Monday it has secured agreements for 60 high-definition channels from major networks, as part of a goal to launch 100 of them this year.

The channels, expected to debut in the third quarter, will include HD versions of well-known networks including those owned by General Electric -controlled NBC Universal and Time Warner Inc.'s Turner Networks, executives said.

The news will be part of a roster of announcements at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week, where DirecTV will also discuss plans to allow subscribers to connect to Internet videos from home computers as well as a portable version of its service that fits in a suitcase, called Sat-Go.

Despite the gadget-heavy focus of the annual confab, where the $145 billion consumer electronics industry this year will trot out new devices that make connecting PCs to TVs easier, DirecTV will also focus on a topic of prior conventions.

"All of these add-ons that enable new features are fantastic," Eric Shanks, executive vice president of DirecTV Entertainment, said in a phone interview ahead of the announcement.

But, "Where the world is going is into HD. None of the wireless products is going to bring you 100 channels of HD. Once you have standard definition content, these things help you share it."

HD video delivers high-resolution pictures and better sound quality, and the promise of more HD programming helped boost sales of flat panel TVs. But buyers soon realized that while cable and satellite operators talked up plans to offer more channels, few actually carry more than a dozen HD channels.

     INTERNET VIDEOS DIRECT

DirecTV's focus will be on HD video, but it will also discuss ongoing talks with top online video services including Google Inc.'s YouTube and News Corp.'s MySpace to let subscribers view Internet videos on TVs.

DirecTV customers with HD digital video recorder (DVR) set-top boxes can already view pictures and listen to music stored on home computers directly through their TVs and home entertainment systems.

From the second quarter, subscribers will be able to watch videos from PC hard drives on their TVs, and then videos direct from online services by the end of this year, Shank said.

Also in 2007, DirecTV customers with HD DVRs should be able to create personalized channels, similar to how Yahoo Web site users can tailor what they see on certain channels.

Subscribers will also be able to browse DirecTV's Web site to find what is available on-demand, click the link, and have the movies stored directly on their DVRs, Shank said.

Shank said with all the new sources of programs, finding things could be a challenge, and he planned to look for innovative graphic user interfaces at the electronics show.

"As we start to add all this content we really have to spend the next year to figure out a better way for viewers to find what they're looking for," he said.

DirecTV also plans to say it is starting an international video gaming league with competitive event broadcasts that will be available to more than 100 million homes through deals with News Corp.-controlled BSkyB Plc and Star Asia.

© Reuters 2007. The mantra about stock traders, of course, is that their daily responses are based more on emotion, less on analysis. Wireless analysts’ initial reactions were tempered by more thorough knowledge of the industry, and, in some cases, actual-though-limited experience with the iPhone itself.

Albert Lin, financial analyst with American Technology Research, noted in a report to investors today that Cingular Wireless L.L.C., where the iPhone will launch initially in June, experienced a doubling of its net subscriber addition rate when the Motorola Inc. Razr launched in the third quarter of 2004. Thus, he expects Cingular to grab additional market share through its new deal with Apple.

“We believe the Apple iPhone could have similar results,” Lin wrote.

The potential losers may be Motorola and Sony Ericsson, according to Lin, because both have a substantial position in the device portfolio at Cingular.

Sony Ericsson, in particular, has had a substantial and profitable share of the music-phone market and Cingular is its largest client among the top-tier carriers. Sony Ericsson executives—including North American President Najmi Jarwala and Paul Hamnett, vice president for North American sales—projected an aura of calm as news of the Apple announcement rippled crossed the Internet, suggesting that Apple’s market entry would only help grow the music-phone space.

Avi Greengart, market analyst with Current Analysis—who traveled from CES to MacWorld to get his hands on the actual device—credited Apple with delivering an innovative, attractive and responsive user interface that nonetheless draws on elements already available from other vendors such as Palm Inc. and Sony Ericsson. By packaging innovations both new and extant, however, Greengart said in a report yesterday that Apple would likely take credit for—or be given credit for by less savvy consumers—everything contained in the iPhone.

After all, the new device falls in the nascent-though-growing, smartphone-with-multimedia-capability category, already occupied by a bevy of devices such as the Motorola Q, the Research In Motion Ltd. Pearl, and others.

Beyond technology is the gadget factor, according to Greengart.

“The touch-everything UI [on the iPhone] is … fun,” Greengart wrote.

Whether fun and, undoubtedly, the cachet of owning the new device, will move consumers to pay $500 or $600 and migrate to Cingular—the first carrier to offer it—obviously remains to be seen. A number of analysts, prior to Apple’s announcement, had suggested that between the CDMA/GSM split in the American market, pricing competition and the number of existing vendors, the computer titan’s market impact would be incremental.

“It is far from a mainstream proposition,” Greengart wrote. “The iPhone’s initial market will be extremely limited.”

Greengart’s caveats: the device is expensive, touchscreen functionality is not universally popular and Cingular’s exclusive deal could drive new subscriptions while dampening its overall device sales. Despite the iPhone’s touchscreen QWERTY keyboard, Greengart saw little impact on RIM’s hold on the corporate IT-driven device market. Also, the EDGE speed device is up against a slew of higher-speed HSDPA-speed devices landing at Cingular.

“3G is conspicuously missing,” Greengart wrote.

With a June launch date at Cingular—six months is a very long time in the device market—the analyst believes that Apple will face catch-up challengers from “the competition,” previously known as the pantheon of existing mobile device vendors, now facing a brand-based and user-interface-based challenge from the cheeky newcomer from the personal computer world.

But Apple’s splash had its intended effect of creating chatter at CES and across the Internet.
