Pierce, FL – Defeat Diabetes Foundation announced the launch of their next diabetes awareness program: Martial Arts Defeat Diabetes® Community Action Project (MADDCAP™) , a historic health curriculum designed for Martial Arts schools focusing on diabetes awareness and prevention. The program is the result of a unique collaboration between Defeat Diabetes Foundation Executive Director Andy Mandell – Mr. Diabetes® and Martial Arts Master Teacher Tom Callos.

“Children are at great risk for developing diabetes and are also the most likely to benefit from diabetes prevention information. We developed this first of its kind program with martial arts schools in mind since they primarily serve children and young adults, but it could easily be used by other youth related organizations such as the Scouts or Y programs,” said Mandell.

“This potentially life-saving curriculum includes information about the disease, the risk factors, warning signs, complications and ways to prevent the disease through nutrition and physical activity,” he concluded.

“Martial Arts schools will also share this crucial information within their respective communities through local schools, youth groups and other civic organizations. The net result will be a visible and active resource for basic diabetes information, and the positive and healthy advantages of a martial arts education for both youngsters and adults,” added Callos.

Why diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic and preventable health condition that has reached epidemic proportions. 22 million Americans have diabetes and one third is undiagnosed. 54 million are “pre-diabetic” and are at risk for developing the disease.

Defeat Diabetes Foundation

Defeat Diabetes Foundation (DDF), is dedicated to creating awareness about and preventing diabetes. DDF provides 3,000 pages information on the self-management of the disease at www.DefeatDiabetes.org. Public information programs include KIDD Project, DAN Project, and The Wake Up and Walk® Tour.

Tom Callos and THE 100

Led by Master/Teacher Tom Callos, www.tomcallos.com, and guided by the principle of bringing martial arts philosophy “Out of the Dojo and into the world”. THE 100 are martial arts citizen-teachers who are expanding the meaning and curriculum of self-defense education to include more than blocks, kicks, punches and throws. They embrace a brand of self-defense that includes awareness for the way we treat our planet, ourselves, our family, neighbors and community, and the way we consume, think and behave.

Contact: Dawn Swidorski

415.671.2991

dswidorski@DefeatDiabetes.org

</rss:item><rss:item rdf:about="http://vegasnews.squarespace.com/mr-diabetes-wake-up-and-walk-t/2008/3/8/mr-diabetes-tackles-ultimate-black-belt-test.html"><rss:title>Mr. Diabetes® Tackles Ultimate Black Belt Test™</rss:title><rss:link>http://vegasnews.squarespace.com/mr-diabetes-wake-up-and-walk-t/2008/3/8/mr-diabetes-tackles-ultimate-black-belt-test.html</rss:link>

<dc:subject></dc:subject>

Mr. Diabetes® Tackles Ultimate Black Belt Test™

Adds Martial Arts Challenge in addition to Wake Up and Walk® Tour

Madeira Beach, FL – Just in case anyone thought Andy Mandell – Mr. Diabetes® was slacking off on his epic 10,000 mile walk of the perimeter of the United States, Andy has announced that he is also tackling Master Teacher Tom Callos’ Ultimate Black Belt Test.

Defeat Diabetes Foundation Executive Director, Andrew P. We can beat this disease locally, but it isn’t going to happen on a national level. Unchecked, diabetes, which costs the U.S. $225 billion annually, will bankrupt our healthcare system,” said Mandell.

Top diabetes researchers agree that a cure is at least 20 years away. The key to stopping diabetes is awareness and prevention through personal responsibility and lifestyle changes. Losing 10 – 15 pounds can make all the difference. Cut out fast food, snack foods and soda. Add 5-9 servings of fresh fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains to your daily diet.

“Pursue a more active lifestyle, like walking. Mandell believes his efforts have impacted diabetes. THE WALK™ has captured the imagination of the public and Mr. Diabetes® is living proof that diabetics are neither helpless nor hopeless.

About the Wake Up and Walk â Tour

Now in its 7th and final year, Mr. Diabetes® is the sole walker. You may have seen him walking state highways in his brightly colored safety vest and walking pole. He’s walked through 33 states, crossed 100 major rivers, 4 time zones (twice!), and gone through 22 pairs of walking shoes. He has met one-on-one with over 60,000 individuals and received over 100 Proclamations by Senators, Congressmen, Governors and Mayors. Through appearances and meetings at hospitals, such as Loma Linda, Johns Hopkins, Cleveland Clinic, schools, civic organizations, and the media he has reached over 65 million Americans. The Walk® continues through Florida before reaching the finish line in Madeira Beach, Florida in December of 2008.

For more information about diabetes, THE WALK™ and to make a tax-deductible donation: www.DefeatDiabetes.org

</rss:item><rss:item rdf:about="http://vegasnews.squarespace.com/mr-diabetes-wake-up-and-walk-t/2007/11/15/mr-diabetes-on-abc-news.html"><rss:title>Mr. Diabetes on ABC News</rss:title><rss:link>http://vegasnews.squarespace.com/mr-diabetes-wake-up-and-walk-t/2007/11/15/mr-diabetes-on-abc-news.html</rss:link>

<dc:subject></dc:subject>

</rss:item><rss:item rdf:about="http://vegasnews.squarespace.com/mr-diabetes-wake-up-and-walk-t/mr-diabetes-tackles-ultimate-black-belt-test.html"><rss:title>Mr. Diabetes® Tackles Ultimate Black Belt Test™</rss:title><rss:link>http://vegasnews.squarespace.com/mr-diabetes-wake-up-and-walk-t/mr-diabetes-tackles-ultimate-black-belt-test.html</rss:link>

<dc:subject></dc:subject>

Mr. Diabetes® Tackles Ultimate Black Belt Test™
Adds Martial Arts Challenge in addition to Wake Up and Walk® Tour

Madeira Beach , FL – Just in case anyone thought Andy Mandell – Mr. Diabetes®, was slacking off on his epic 10,000+ mile walk of the perimeter of the United States, Andy has announced that he is also tackling Master Teacher Tom Callos’ Ultimate Black Belt Test.

Defeat Diabetes Foundation Executive Director, Andrew P. And there is no doubt that Type 2 diabetes can be prevented in nearly 90% of all cases” said Mandell. “The alternative is projected health care costs of over 1 trillion dollars annually to care for the nation’s diabetics. You don’t have to be a math whiz to figure out that this disease can and will bankrupt our healthcare system if we continue on the same path” he continued.

“The key to breaking this disease cycle is awareness, prevention and, when it’s too late for that then, early detection and proper management to avoid the costly complications associated with this disease. All the research dollars being spent looking for a cure simply aren’t going to keep people from getting this disease” said Mandell. “Top diabetes researchers agree with me that a cure is at least 20 years or more out. It’s time to stop trying to convince folks that a cure is just around the corner. IT IS NOT!!! Prevention is the key and it’s all about taking personal responsibility and making lifestyle changes. That’s what the Wake Up and Walk® Tour is all about and why I’ve been out here walking and talking with the average guy- on- the- street,” said Mandell.

Obesity and diabetes are inextricably linked. Yet, the necessary lifestyle changes are easier to make than you think; losing even 10 – 15 pounds can make all the difference. Start by cutting out fast food, snack foods and soda. Institute a family dinner hour and add 5-9 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as legumes and whole grains such as oatmeal, brown rice or barley to your diet each day.

It’s also important to pursue a more active lifestyle -- Mr. Diabetes® recommends walking. “Unless you are severely disabled, walking is something that everyone can do. Start out with a minimum of ten minutes a day and increase the time gradually. In a short time you’ll find you look forward to it. Many families can incorporate a walk before dinner. It’s a great way to catch up with each others’ lives and get healthier at the same time,” says Mandell. “These simple steps can potentially stave off the onset of the disease and will certainly help minimize any of the complications. Of course, before starting any physical fitness program you should always work with your medical team to determine your fitness level,” Mandell concluded.

Mr. Diabetes® follows his own advice and walks ”daily”, checks his blood glucose as many as ten times per day, eats a well balanced diet with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, and has medical oversight. In spite of that, he still suffers from some complications of the disease, including severe neuropathy (loss of feeling in the lower limbs), which requires him to use a walking pole for balance.

“People on the street are now taking THE WALK™, and me, more seriously because 8,000 miles is a pretty significant accomplishment – especially, by a senior citizen and an insulin-dependent diabetic; and no one can take that away. We’ve stuck with it and an amazing team of people behind me have helped make it happen,” he concluded.

Before THE WALK Ô began there wasn’t nearly the focus and awareness about diabetes that exists today. Mandell would like to think that his efforts have had some impact on that. Clearly, THE WALK™ has captured the imagination of the public. Mr. Diabetes® has personally talked with tens of thousands of individuals who’ve shared their personal stories – many with tragic outcomes, but he’s also provided a real human face that shows diabetics are neither helpless nor hopeless.

About the Wake Up and Walk â Tour

THE WALK™ is a 10,000+ mile epic journey of the perimeter of the United States and is now in its 5th year. Defeat Diabetes Foundation Executive Director, Andrew P. Mandell – Mr. Diabetes®, is the sole walker (guest slots are accepted) -- You may have seen him in his brightly colored safety vest and walking pole being followed by an SUV that serves as support. He’s walked through 28 states, crossed 80 major rivers, and walked through 4 time zones (twice!), gone through 20 pairs of walking shoes, and 4 Tour Managers. He has personally met and spoken with over 45,000 individuals one-on-one and been honored with 100 Proclamations by Senators, Congressmen, Governors and Mayors. Through appearances at hospitals, schools and civic organizations, and via media outreach he has reached over 50 million Americans; all to create awareness about an insidious epidemic: diabetes. The Mr. Diabetes â Wake Up and Walk® Tour will continue through Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida before reaching the finish line in Madeira Beach, Florida sometime in the latter part of 2007.

About Diabetes

Over 21 million people have the disease, and nearly one-third of all diabetics are undiagnosed. Another 54 million people are “pre-diabetics” who are unaware they are in danger of developing the disease. Diabetes comes with a host of severe complications, including adult blindness, amputations, heart attacks, strokes, kidney disease, Alzheimer’s and a host of other equally devastating problems. Diabetes causes 215,000 deaths annually in the United States alone. More tragic, 90% of the time, Type 2 Diabetes is PREVENTABLE!

About Defeat Diabetes Foundation

Defeat Diabetes Foundation was established in 1990 and is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity. Its mission is to inform, educate and alert the general public, diabetics, pre-diabetics and elected officials about the disease, its prevention and the consequences of undiagnosed and/or poorly managed diabetes. The Foundation provides accurate, up-to-date and practical information on the treatment and self-management of the disease, recommends diabetic-friendly products and services on their website and beneficial information through a free monthly online E-Lerts™ newsletter. They support public information programs, including the KIDD Project which has provided 3 million Free Defeat Diabetes® Screening Test brochures to 5000 schools in all 50 states, the DAN Project in memory of Dan Kerner, which has produced Public Service Announcements and, of course, The Mr. Diabetes â Wake Up and Walk® Tour. Mandell, 61, or Mr. Diabetes as he is more commonly known, is walking through parts of Middlesex County this week as part of his nationwide campaign to raise awareness of diabetes and its preventability.

Mandell, the executive director of the nonprofit Madeira Beach, Fla.-based Defeat Diabetes Foundation, has walked 7,750 miles of his 10,000-plus-mile walk of the perimeter of the United States, raising awareness about diabetes prevention and treatment by putting a human face on the disease. By walking along the perimeter of the United States, he is also demonstrating that having diabetes has not prevented him from living an active life.

"If an insulin dependent senior can do (the walk), anybody can do it, and can become more aware of diabetes," said Mandell, who checks his blood sugar six to 10 times a day and injects insulin four to six times daily on average.

He started his walk in Middlesex County yesterday in Edison, and traveled south through Highland Park, New Brunswick and Franklin. He averages about 10 to 15 miles per day.

Diabetes affects 20.8 million people, about 7 percent of the U.S. population, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, increasing steadily since 1980.

"Prevention and early identification are the message," said Mandell. "Conventional wisdom (on diabetes) has failed miserably. The number of people with diabetes is increasing every year."

He would like to see some of the millions spent on research for a diabetes cure to be spent on prevention of the disease.

The sixth leading cause of death in the United States, diabetes may also cause adult blindness and kidney failure, and at times, people may have to get amputations of their lower extremities. The disease costs the nation an estimated $132 billion in direct medical costs as well as indirect costs, such as disability and premature death, according to the Department of Health and Human Services.

After Mandell was diagnosed with diabetes in 1985, he and his brother co-founded the nonprofit foundation in 1990. Mandell started the 10,000 mile Wake Up and Walk Tour in January 2002, but had done a 450-mile trial walk in Florida in late 2000. He estimates he will be back home in Madeira Beach, Fla., in late 2007 or early 2008.

Mandell spent two years of his life almost bedridden because of the disease, and carries a walking stick on his walks because his legs and feet are numb due to diabetes.

He also said it's important for diabetics to see an endocrinologist regularly, to eat healthy and exercise regularly. "We need all three; treatment is incomplete without it," Mandell said.

On the foundation's Web site, DefeatDiabetes.org, Mandell provides up-to-date information on the treatment and self-management of the disease, along with medical, government and other resources for diabetics.

Traveling with Mandell are Russ and Shirley Barriger, a married couple from Unionville, Mich., who are his tour managers. The Barrigers are responsible for Mandell's safety on the road and they also map out his walking route and document the tour on video.

"(Mandell) wants to be an advocate. People with diabetes are not helpless or hopeless, and through management, you can prevent type 2 diabetes," said Shirley Barriger, whose 27-year-old son has diabetes.

Mandell is living in a recreational vehicle and camps each night after his walk.

</rss:item><rss:item rdf:about="http://vegasnews.squarespace.com/mr-diabetes-wake-up-and-walk-t/2005/2/1/vegas-buzz-radio-produces-psa-for-defeat-diabetes-foundation.html"><rss:title>Vegas Buzz Radio Produces PSA for Defeat Diabetes Foundation</rss:title><rss:link>http://vegasnews.squarespace.com/mr-diabetes-wake-up-and-walk-t/2005/2/1/vegas-buzz-radio-produces-psa-for-defeat-diabetes-foundation.html</rss:link>

<dc:subject></dc:subject>

Vegas Buzz Radio Produces PSA for Defeat Diabetes Foundation
