The same mobsters of the 1940s and '50s controlled casinos in
both Las Vegas and Havana, sharing stars such as Nat King Cole and giving
Havana equal claim to the floor-show style celebrated in "Havana Night Club."

Fair enough. But other aspects of the revue, from costumes to choreography,
still seem more familiar than they probably ought to. And the youthful cast
often seemed a bit reigned in by a showroom/cruise ship format that sticks to the
standard perceptions of Cuban culture.

Fortunately, the music and exuberant energy of the performers transcends any
such boundaries. By the barefoot finale, ticketbuyers are asked to dance and
clap along, as they are in many shows on the Strip. The difference here is that
the invitation seems sincere. I
guess that's why the polls say the election is so close this year. But we're
not talking political issues here we're talking about the number of people who
have been riding the new Las Vegas Monorail and whether those numbers are a
good thing or a bad thing. If you listen to the PR folks for the monorail it's
all good. If you listen to the Las Vegas Review Journal, it's pretty bad. Who is
right? Read on...

Since the new mass-transit system opened back in July there have been lots of
reports in various media outlets suggesting the trains were not bringing in
the amount of people needed to support the project financially. For the record,
the monorail folks are estimating around 30,000 people a day riding the
system, about 10,000 a day short of the number needed to break even.

Perhaps fed up with the negative talk, the PR company handling the monorail
sent out a press release to folks like me saying everything is fine, there are
plenty of riders, rah-rah, and be sure to use these numbers and
interpretations of numbers when you talk about the monorail. The tone of the press release
varied between the typical cheerleading you'd hear from a PR firm and something
that approached "shame on you for saying bad things about us."

The release rubbed many people the wrong way, including apparently, the
editorial staff of the Las Vegas Review Journal who published an op-ed piece
bashing the monorail as being "disappointing." It went on to suggest the press
release was patently wrong in its suggestion that things were fine and were only
going to get better.

So, what does it all really mean? Well, I worked PR for a long time (worst
years of my life) and I understand what its like to have to try to spin a
negative into a positive but I think the publicists may have overreacted to the talk
with a press release that sounded a little defensive. I also think the LVRJ
may have been a little too over-the-top in their assessment of the state of the
monorail system.

My personal belief, as stated in this column before, is the monorail is doing
fine in terms of the number of riders -- perhaps not as well as most people
would've liked but certainly not terrible. And I do believe it will pick up once
we get out of the dog days of summer and crowds -- especially convention going
crowds -- pick up during the fall.

The long term implications are undeniably huge. If this privately funded
chunk of the monorail doesn't attain profitability, it'll probably fall to the
taxpayers to at least help fund the proposed Downtown and Airport lines.

But it has barely been a month since the thing opened! Isn't that a little
too soon for people on either side of the debate to be making pronouncements
about how good (or bad) things are?

I'll ask the question I always ask at this point: what does this mean to you,
the average Las Vegas visitor? Absolutely nothing. Sure, if they don't get
enough riders the fares could go up to compensate but they're not going to shrug
their shoulders and say "eh, we tried, turn it off" - not after spending
nearly three-quarters of a billion dollars to build it. The monorail is here to
stay and don't let anyone tell you any differently.

On a related note... the trains have been running mostly glitch free but there
was one major problem last week. Usually the monorail is completely automated,
meaning no driver. However, if there is a problem, the trains can be operated
manually by a human being. Such was the case last week when a monorail
employee was piloting a struggling train into the Las Vegas Hilton station and
accidentally opened the doors on the wrong side where instead of a cozy platform
there was nothing but thin air.

The driver realized his error quickly and opened the correct doors before
anyone got hurt. He has been suspended pending a review.
http://www.vegas4visitors.com/column/04_08_23.htm
--
Las Vegas Q and A by Rick Garmen

Question: Here's a challenge for you: I'm going to pick up one of those 12
shot disposable cameras when I get to Las Vegas and can only take 12 pictures
during my stay. What 12 things should I absolutely get a snapshot of?

Answer: Wow -- that is a challenge -- one that I'm hoping is purely
theoretical, otherwise we need to talk. But I'll play along. So here are my choices for
the 12 Best Vegas Photo Opportunities:

Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign -- located just south of Mandalay Bay this
is probably one of the most photographed icons of the city, but don't let the
overabundance of pictures stop you from getting one of your own. Just be
careful... it's located in the center median of a very busy highway with no easy
access other than dodging cars.

Luxor Pyramid -- If you go out to the sidewalk in front of the place you can
get a great shot of the Sphinx replica with the big black pyramid behind it.

New York-New York -- Depending on what kind of photo you want, there are two
good spots for getting a photo of the Big Apple wonderland... either from the
sidewalk directly in front near the Tribute to Heroes looking up or across the
street in front of the Tropicana, preferably on one of the pedestrian bridges if
you can get a good shot past the safety barriers. Try and time it so you get
a shot of the roller coaster zooming by the front.

Bellagio Water Fountains -- You can get a good picture from the sidewalk in
front of or across the street from Bellagio but the best shot is from the top of
the Eiffel Tower Experience at Paris, especially at night.

Caesars Palace -- This is another one of those Vegas icons and even though the
front of it has changed a lot, you can still get a good picture of the
classic fountains leading up to the front of the hotel.

Mirage Volcano -- You'll have to fight the crowds to get a good picture of
this but I've found the best angle is to position yourself on the sidewalk just
to the right of it as you are looking at it (toward Treasure Island).

Venetian Gondolas/Grand Canal Shoppes -- Go inside to the impressive mall and
get a photo of people riding the gondolas up the canal in the center of it. Or
better yet, take the ride yourself and have someone take a picture of you!

Wynn Las Vegas -- It's still under construction but don't you want to have a
picture of what will be the most expensive hotel in the world ($2.5 billion)
when it opens next spring?

The New Frontier -- It's not much to look at, but it is the oldest
continually operating major hotel casino on The Strip (since 1942) and the chances of it
being around for much longer are pretty slim. Get a picture of history before
it goes away.

View from the Stratosphere -- If you're brave enough, walk up to the edge of
the indoor observation deck and you can get a photo looking almost straight
down about 1,000 feet. Yikes.

Fremont Street -- Go at night to get a full view of either the lights of
Glitter Gulch or the wild Viva Vision overhead light and sound show.

Elvis Impersonator or Showgirl -- They are everywhere. Get a picture of
yourself with one -- it'll make a good Christmas card.

Question: We are a 50 year old couple who think Vegas is not for little kids.
What hotels are not kid friendly?

Answer: I couldn't agree with you more, Norm... I think Vegas is the last
place on earth you should take your kids. Okay, well, maybe not the last place
but it's way down on the list. There's just not a lot for them to do there and
when kids get bored they have a tendency to take it out on the people around
them, which could be me if I happen to be sitting at the pool. The city is
obviously much more fun for the adults.

There's no way to guarantee a kid-free trip but there are a few things you
can do to up your odds (this is Vegas after all).

The general rule is the more expensive the place the fewer children you'll
have to deal with. Bellagio, Venetian, Caesars Palace, THEHotel at Mandalay Bay,
The Ritz-Carlton, the Four Seasons, and certainly the upcoming Wynn Las Vegas
are all upscale places that tend to attract an upscale crowd that doesn't
usually bring the smaller children. There are certain attractions at those hotels
that draw the families - the fountains at Bellagio, the beach pool area at
Mandalay Bay - but generally speaking you'll find fewer families there than at
other, less expensive hotels.

You'll also find few families at the hip places like Hard Rock and The Palms
but you'll find a lot of 20 and 30 year olds acting like children, so I don't
know if that's actually much better.

The places you want to avoid are the highly themed hotels like Circus-Circus,
Excalibur, and to a lesser degree MGM Grand and Luxor. You'll also want to
stay away from the non-casino hotels. These tend to draw lots of families who
seem to think its okay to bring the kids to Sin City as long as they aren't
actually staying directly amongst the actual sinning.

If you don't mind getting off The Strip, Downtown Vegas seems to be a good
option for people looking to escape the kids as well. The Golden Nugget is the
nicest hotel but all of them seem to draw an older crowd with fewer families.

Now, before everyone else starts sending me and Norm some nasty e-mails,
please understand that Vegas is open to anyone who wants to come. If you have
brought the family before and the kids have had a great time, then that's terrific
and I encourage you do it again, offering you the exact opposite advice in
terms of where to stay and what to do. You see, we all have different ideas as
to what constitutes a perfect Vegas vacation and mine... and Norm's... just
happens to be one that doesn't involve lots of kids.
http://www.vegas4visitors.com
--
Fremont Street Experience cleans up vendors.
By Kate Silver

The large, albino snake was a traffic-stopper on the Fremont Street
Experience, as its owners gingerly handled it, wrapping it around paying customers as
they paused for a photo. Same with the huge, clawing birds that would perch on
the heads of strangers--up to seven at a time--gurgling, cooing, rarely trying
to escape as they waited for the camera flash. And then there was that artist,
painter of monkeys--smoking monkeys, gambling monkeys, Carmen Miranda-style
monkeys. And that guy who painted glossy dolphin and superhero creations, as a
crowd gathered and bought his work while it was still practically wet.
Somewhere in the mix was a sculptor, too.

No longer. As of Sunday, these vendors were gone. The FSE gave them 10 days'
notice and say they don't expect to refill the slots. Joe Schillaci, the
Experience's president and chief executive, says these vendors, who operate off
tables or their own booths and not the matching kiosks that make up the norm,
were sometimes expanding their space in an unsightly manner, and causing traffic
jams (Doesn't that mean they're doing good business?). He adds that they don't
quite go along with the brand that the company is trying to project.

"Our brand is vintage Vegas," Schillaci says. "It's basically our 10 great,
legendary casinos all within a few steps of one another, so you have good
walkability from one casino to the other. It's kind of old-fashioned hospitality."

Don't they realize the frenetic energy the attraction had taken on with these
vendors? Walk down the Fremont Street Experience now and you'll see dozens of
nice, neat kiosks, and, except for the canopy, heat, occasional homeless
person or sight of the police cracking down on demonstrations of free speech, it
feels like a mall anywhere in the United States: vanilla. There's that
"Build-A-Bear" knockoff. T-shirts with forlorn kitty-cats and messages like "I need a
hug!" Sunglasses, watches, candles, cell-phone covers and even edible underwear
--two for $10.

Gone is the flair that these more offbeat vendors brought to the place. They
hinted at a style that was a little bit carnival, a little bit Vegas, a feel
that seemed to match well with the tourist/local/eccentric purity of Downtown.
But the carnival atmosphere apparently didn't fit into the brand that
Schillaci speaks of, or with the 45 kiosks and five other non-kiosk stands, so they're
out.

Schillaci says they won't be replaced with vendors who are more corporate, as
some have speculated. "We're not replacing them. We're not replacing them
because we're trying to reduce the non-kiosk vendors that are out there," he
says. But in excluding them from the area, FSE is essentially increasing the
corporate feel. Aside from the guy who writes your name on rice and a caricature
artist, most of these places seem more suburban strip mall than vintage Vegas.
http://www.lasvegasweekly.com/2004/08/05/awsi2.html
--
Behind the Comedy:
Four Serious Lessons About the Funny Business in Las Vegas.

"What's going on?" asks the guy who sells billboards. Wallace, however, essentially rents the theater from
the Flamingo and promotes his own show. This makes him a small-business owner.

"I am the boss," he says. "It isn't just the marketing.
Steve and Eileen's Trip Report Part One

(Steve speaking)

We arrived in Las Vegas on July 1st on a non-eventfull flight on American
Airlines, an unusual occurrence. There was no taxi line so we arrived at the
Imperial Palace within a half an hour of landing. My friend Bob Cohen had our
favorite room blocked for us. The room has a separate bedroom. Eileen likes this
feature as I am an early riser and I do make a lot of noise even though I try
not to. We were staying at the I.P. for the first six nights and then we were
moving to Harrah's for the last four nights.

We were very tired so we just went to the IP buffet and fooled around with a
few slots. We got a big scare on the one dollar Triple Star slot. We got
Triple Star with a Triple Star and then a BLANK. It would have been 9 times
anything that appeared on the last line. It would have been a nice way to start the
trip.

July 2nd we were meeting our friends Dave and Wendy Tuley and their sweet
little daughters Jordyn and Peyton at the Aladdin Buffet. Dave writes for The
Daily Racing Form and is an excellent sports handicapper...notice I left out
horses. Eileen was in her glory with the two girls and she does love babies. We
had a great time, as usual with our Las Vegas family and look forward to seeing
them in October.

(Eileen speaking) I absolutely adore those babies! And, of course, it's
always nice to see Dave and Wendy.

Gambling: (Steve speaking)
I did better on the horses this trip than Eileen but still didn't come out
ahead as I had two days without a single winner. The lowest bet I collect on was
a $9.60 TRIFECTA and the highest was an $19.00 horse. I made a lot of
mistakes in not betting horses that did win or I would have come out ahead.

(Eileen speaking) Well, I did do better one day. I had a $55 win, a $27 win
and a $19 win! I would have had more but sometimes I pick them and don't bet
them! I was more excited about the Mets sweeping the Yankees.. heh-heh-heh

(Steve speaking) I also did better than Eileen at Pai Gow which we only
played one time. I at least broke even but Eileen lost $100. I have to admit she
got the ugliest cards I have ever seen dealt in Pai Gow.

(Eileen speaking) I love playing Pai Gow and at one point I was up $45 but it
turned bad pretty quick. We also played 3 Card Poker - for about 10 minutes!
I won $60 and Steve lost $60!

(Steve speaking) We had a drink one night at the bar at the IP so naturally
we started playing the slots at the bar. I saw that Eileen was fooling around
with Blackjack so I tried to teach her the proper way to play the game and
believe me I am not an expert but do know the basics. Of course I lost and Eileen
ended up winning $50. Maybe we will try it at the tables in October.

SLOTS:(Steve speaking)
As in our past trips, there is usually one machine in which we tend to do
well on. This trip it was the STAR machines. Eileen surprised me one morning by
handing me $240 which was half of the $480 jackpot she won on a TRIPLE STAR
machine at the I.P. We always go 50-50 on all slots winnings. Our next jackpot we
hit was at the Riviera. Before our dinner and show, we were playing a DOUBLE
TRIPLE STAR machine and we hit a DOUBLE-7-TRIPLE combination for another
jackpot of $480. This was a hot machine and we ended up cashing out at $600. Our
third and final Jackpot was on the antique machine SCOREBOARD at the I.P.This is
the baseball type machine with the clown face as one of the symbols. We got a
TRIPLE-TRIPLE BAR-DOUBLE combination for 880 quarters. This was also a hot
machine and we cashed out at 1000 quarters or $250.

(Eileen speaking) I love it when I say "Let's play this machine." and Steve
makes a face, gives a big sigh and pouts but plays anyway and then we win.
That's what happened on that Scoreboard machine. I had more luck on the slots
when Steve was not with me. I walked away with $60 on the 5cent Sinatra machines
a few times. I was also doing good on a new quarter Monopoly machine when I
had to leave to go meet him.

(Steve speaking) We did play the DOUBLE DIAMOND WITH CHEESE machines at just
about every casino we went to but we had our best luck at Ceasars. We got the
bonus round symbol and made it to the top loop of the bonus round, a first for
us. We really thought we would win the ultra jackpot but we landed on a
collect symbol after about 10 moves. This is a fun machine if you get the bonus
round. We got a lot of play from most of the machines we tried and didn't bomb
out of too many of them.

(Eileen speaking) I'm not too crazy about this machine but Steve really likes
them. There was a lady next to us at Bally's who was hitting like crazy on
this machine. She said she was playing about an hour and a half when we sat next
to her and she didn't leave till an hour after that with about $300.

Hotels: (Steve speaking)
We stayed our first six nights at the Imperial Palace with a view of the
Strip. The room was not a remodeled room but it was clean and comfy. Over the last
year or so there has been very positive changes at the I.P. It is one of the
friendliest casinos in Las Vegas. All the people there make you feel at home.
The dealers are great, which gets a big thumbs up. It's great to have a
friendly dealer especially when you're losing..right Eileen?

(Eileen speaking) You should know, Dear.

(Steve speaking) The LEGENDS PIT and the CHAMPAGNE PIT are two examples on
how the I.P. is trying to be creative. The LEGENDS PIT where the dealers are
celebrity impersonators is now starting earlier than the 6 P.M.time but the pit
doesn't switch to the "entertaining" mode until 6 P.M. and then the pit rocks.
There were a few new dealers this time. You have to check out RODNEY
DANGERFIELD, he is a riot. It's a great place to play and there are $5.00 tables. The
CHAMPAGNE PIT is just what is says, it's a pit that servers Champagne while you
play blackjack. The dealers have their own outfits and different "era" music
is played at different times of the day. It could be Rock, the 50's or R and
B. But whatever it is, the customers have a great time playing there and the
dealers are awesome.

The I.P. has also added a very low limit poker room upstairs near the buffet.
Table limits are only $1-2, $2-4 and $3-6. Poker room manager, Bob Sanders
has assured me that this room was meant for the casual poker player who is in
Las Vegas to have a good time and not to be racked over the coals by any type of
professional player. Bob is a 25 year poker room veteran and keeps the games
honest. Professional players are asked to leave. I also noted that these low
limit tables were getting a lot of action so get there early to get a seat.

There will be more positive changes coming to the I.P. in the near future.
Despite it's past reputation, the new owners are making a great effort to
improve this hotel and casino and I think they are succeeding. I have a great friend
that is an Executive Slot Host there in Bob Cohen whom I've had the pleasure
in knowing for a few years. He is definitely a People Person. If you are
interested in staying at the I.P. please let me know and I will put you in touch
with Bob.

Footnote: (Steve speaking)
We were at the I.P. the night of the "fire." It turned out to be a motor in
one of the less used elevators. We were talking to Bob at the front desk when
all of a sudden, black smoke started filing the casino. Kudos to everyone at
the I.P. who handled this emergency by being calm, cool and collected. It
appears that advanced training for such emergencies as this paid off as no one was
hurt and as this was handled with utmost professionalism.

Harrah's: (Steve speaking)
Eileen and I have always considered Harrah's our "home away from home" but
due to better offers we haven't stayed there in quite some time. Customer
service at Harrah's is exceptional. From check-in to check-out, you are treated like
a family member. I just want to give a THUMBS UP to Sophia at check-in. She
was very helpful to me in providing us a nice room and allowing us an early
check-in as we had to vacate the I.P. by noon.

(Eileen speaking) I really like Harrah's and usually have no complaints about
the rooms. But we stayed in the Mardi Gras tower and I did not like it. The
walls are paper thin and you can hear EVERYTHING from the rooms on either side
of you. The people next to us were so loud at 6AM - for about two hours! - and
again at midnight. The Carnival Tower is much better!

(Steve speaking) The dealers and all employees at Harrah's are wonderful.
There are and will be a lot of changes at Harrah's. One of the changes was to
combine the racebook and sportsbooks into one room and put in a poker room in the
former racebook..not the best decision they have made. (more about this
later) The Carnival Court and La Playa Lounge continue to be the hottest day/night
spots in Las Vegas. You have to see the Dueling Piano shows at the La Playa
Lounge, it's hilarious!

(Eileen speaking) I LOVED the Dueling Pianos and spent some money there
requesting songs and getting involved in some of the "duels". I highly recommend
stopping by there.

(Steve speaking) Eileen and I were very disappointed that we weren't able to
play Pai Gow at Harrah's as the minimum limit was $20 a hand. Those tables
were never filled so why not open a $10 table and have every seat filled? The
biggest problem at Harrah's is that the Executives are making changes to benefit
the corporation, not the customers. Their comping system is probably the
toughest in Las Vegas. We find we get better benefits with MGM, Ceasar's and
Mandalay Bay.

I do recommend Harrah's to everyone. It is a great place to stay.

FOOD: (Steve speaking)
Buffets:

The I.P. Buffet.
Ok no nasty emails please. Eileen and I had this buffet several times as it
was complimentary with our room. In the 4 times we ate at the buffet, there was
only one time that it was sub par. The food overall was average or better.
They have a great salad bar with the best cucumber salad and tuna fish (when
they don't go crazy on the mayo) in Las Vegas. The prime rib and turkey are
execeptional and worth the price of the buffet alone. I would not put this on the
level of the ultra buffets in Las Vegas, but for the price, it's not the worst.
I did get some info that there might be a makeover coming for the buffet very
soon.

(Eileen speaking) I like this buffet also. We mostly at there for lunch and
it was fine. I prefer to get my own drinks (it's faster that way) and you do
that here. Like Steve said, the salad bar is good, I like the roasted turkey and
they have good desserts! I'm happy.......

Harrah's Buffet. (Steve speaking)
I don't like it, never have, never will. It never changes so it's boring.
Eileen likes it, I love Eileen, I go to Harrah's buffet.

(Eileen speaking) Awww... Hey, Steve, I also like 2 carat diamonds and
Jaguars. :-)

(Steve speaking) I stick with soup, salad, veggies, turkey and if it looks
edible, the Chinese food.
Pluses: Ultra great service and staff..ask for Rudy in the A.M.

The Aladdin Buffet.(Steve speaking)
This was the first time we have had lunch at this buffet and I didn't see
that much difference from the dinner buffet. This is one of the top three buffets
in Las Vegas. With cooking stations from Asian to Mexican, you can't help but
to find somethings you really like. It even has a Middle East station! The
selections are too numerous to mention. I sticked mainly with the salad and
chinese stuff and I did bet some rotissere chicken. The dessert bar is also one of
the best in Las Vegas and I did get an ice cream cone there which was my only
dessert that I had.

(Eileen speaking) This buffet could do with a better salad bar though, IMO.

The Rio buffet: (Steve speaking)
Well, there has to be one bad apple in the cart and this was the bad apple.
Not for the food, but for the way it was served, or NOT served in our case. We
got to the buffet at 9:48 P.M. after the Scintas show. The buffet is open
until 11P.M. so we figured we had plenty of time to eat. Boy were we wrong.

The cool thing about the buffet is that you don't have to deal with a person
to get in. You can go to one of many kiosks and swipe your credit card or pay
cash to get in. You can even choose your drink and amount of your tip. (Eileen
speaking) Myself, I don't think it's so cool. I like interacting
with people better than machines. And I can't see putting in a tip for service you've
haven't even gotten yet.

We had a nice seat close to the buffet and a very nice waiter. We were seated
by 10 P.M. We both took turns getting salad and I let Eileen start on the
main meal first. She was in line for the crab legs for about 10 minutes. She came
back and it was my turn. To my surprise I got up from my seat to find the
food being removed from the buffet at 10:30! The ethnic foods went first such as
the Mexican and Chinese stations. The were completely removed. I scurried
around looking for something to eat and the only station left untouched was the
American station. I grabbed what I could before that food was removed also. I
got back to the table and Eileen, who is the dessert Queen, decided to make a
run to the dessert bar. She literally had a dessert plate removed as she was
reaching for it by an attendant. Now I was really ticked off and asked to see a
manager. I was told where to find him and was stopped in my tracks by some sort
of host. I asked to speak to the manager and voiced my complaints to him. As
it turns out, I wasn't the only one who was complaining as the manager refused
to come out and speak to me personally but did authorize that the charges be
removed from my credit card. I was told that the food is not usually removed
until 10:45 P.M. and there was no reason given why on this night it was removed
30 minutes early. I was very disappointed that I did not get to sample most
of the foods because the buffet did look great.

Cravings Buffet at the Mirage: (Steve speaking)
This has to be the best decorated buffet in Las Vegas. In all honesty, you
can't tell you're in a buffet. The stations blend in so well with the decor of
the room, they're almost impossible to see. I was not that hungry when we went
so I stuck to the salad, which is hand tossed after you choose what items you
want. I also had the chicken noodle soup with contained way too much pepper. I
had the rotisserie chicken which melted in your mouth along with the spring
vegetable medley which also was way too peppery. We went to the buffet at 8:30
P.M. and the regular line was still very long. There is a bar that has about
12 seats so if the line is long, you can bypass the line and ask to be seated
at the bar. This works better if you are a party of one or two. I do give this
buffet an above average rating and hopefully in October I'll have more of an
appetite. (

Eileen speaking) I loved this salad bar. I like the idea of selecting
what you want in your salad and they toss it along with the dressing of your choice.
It was very good. The dessert bar had tons of delicious looking cakes, pies
and cookies. Though there was gelato instead of ice cream (I like ice cream).
The one draw back to this buffet is that you have to walk the entire perimeter
of the room to see what food stations are where since there are no signs.

MGM Buffet: (Steve speaking)
It's been quite a while since I ate at this buffet. My memories were of
unsupervised kids running amuck and misbehaving. Things have quieted down over the
years and although there were plenty of kids there, this was a pleasant dining
experience. Recognized now as a Super buffet, this buffet has improved.
Basically, it is still set up the same way as in the past but they have put in
arrows to direct the flow of traffic so you don't continually bump into someone..a
thoughtful touch. The food was fresh and good. I loved the blistered tomatoes
and pizza in the Italian section. I had the usual chicken (notice a pattern
here) and did try the chicken and beef kabobs. The chicken was fine but the
beef was overly spiced, which I think that's the way it's supposed to be served.
There was carved prime rib and turkey that always attracts the largest crowds.
This is another buffet I would recommend to anyone but be aware that the
lines are very long. If you have an MGM Players Card you can ask for a line pass.
You still have to pay but you can bypass the line.

The Bellagio buffet: (Steve speaking)
I crown this buffet, The King Of Buffets! What can you say about this buffet
that has not already been said. It's totally awesome and well worth the now
the almost $35.00 per person cost. I even tried new foods which is totally
unheard of for me. Everything is fresh and expertly prepared. You name it, they
have it. From soup to dessert, this buffet far surpasses every buffet in Las
Vegas. From Beef Wellington to Lobster to Roast Duck to Prime Rib, everything is
perfect. There are the usual action stations along with a dessert bar that
features chocolate covered strawberries. Our waitress EZ was so much fun that
Eileen invited her to have some Champagne with us but she politely refused.

(Eileen speaking) Oh my goodness! The Alaskan King Crab legs (already split),
the huge prawns, the chocolate covered strawberries, the different kinds of
bread, the entrees I never even heard of.. all wonderful. So good I (almost)
had no room for dessert!

(Steve speaking) I suggest to my members that they start a Bellagio Buffet
Bank. Put that spare change away so you can experience this buffet for yourself.
The lines are very long so I suggest going very early or very late. People
were waiting on line for about two hours the night we were there. Like the
Mirage buffet, they also have a bar with seats so you might try asking for those
and possibly avoid waiting in line.

The Sterling Brunch at Bally's: (Steve speaking)
Another Las Vegas gem. The Bally's Sterling Brunch is the best Sunday Brunch
in Las Vegas, bar none. This is an expensive proposition. At $58 a person you
would expect caviar and filet mignon right? Well, you get that plus a lot more
and what you don't see, you just ask for and you get it.

Here is a small sample of the rotating menu:
American Sturgeon caviar served with Warm Blinis.
Seafood on ice including Fresh Oysters, Clams, Crab Claws and Shrimp
Sushi Bar
Pecan Dusted Chicken Salad
Rack of Lamb
Balsamic Glazed Tenderloin of Beef
Grilled Venison Tenderloins
Sesame Crusted Tuna
Pan Seared Filet Mignon
Fresh Broiled Maine Lobster
Dessert Bar and much, much more.
Drinks

Maitre D. Larry makes you feel right at home with his genuine hospitality.
The room is beautiful and on this Sunday, it was not large enough to handle the
overflow crowds. They had to open the room at Changs restaurant to accommodate
everyone. This is such a romantic way to start a Sunday in Las Vegas. As a
finishing touch to a wonderful meal, a rose is presented to every lady.

Do you think that $58 a person is a lot to spend on a single meal? Let me do
a quick comparison. Eileen and I had dinner at the Top of the World restaurant
the same night as the Sterling Brunch. We each had the chicken entree and
everything else was a la carte. We spent more for a chicken dinner that night
than we did for the Sterling Brunch! So treat yourself to the Sterling Brunch at
Bally's at least one time. I know you'll be back again and again. (Eileen
speaking) Since they closed down our favorite Sunday brunch at the Brown Derby,
we've been sampling other Sunday brunches and it looks like this is our new
favorite! I love caviar and shrimp cocktail and had my fill. Had my fill of
champagne, too! We went on the 4th of July and there was a wonderful red-white-and
blue cake that was delicious. I told the waitress to make sure she had some
before she left that day. Wonderful service to go with the wonderful food.

Las Vegas Hilton Buffet: (Steve speaking)
We had a late lunch at this buffet but at least we were told when we paid how
long the food would be left up and there would be a "last call." The food was
left up throughout lunch and there was no need for a "last call" as we had
plenty of time. Eileen enjoyed this buffet more than I did. My selections were
not that great as the chicken I got was overcooked and the chicken chow mein
did not have any taste at all. Nice salad and dessert bar.

(Eileen speaking) If the salad bar is good, the dessert bar is good and they
have roast turkey - then I'm happy! In fact, I will be bringing my kids there
with me when we go the end of July. They had gummi bears with the desserts.

(Steve speaking) We signed up for the slot club AFTER lunch and ended up with
a free buffet voucher for doing so. Too little, too late for me.

Mandalay Bay Buffet: (Steve speaking)
This was another buffet that we had not been to since Eileen's first trip to
Las Vegas. It was good then and it is still good now. We had a table with a
beautiful view of the water. I found the Chinese section to be the best in Las
Vegas. The salad bar however left a lot to be desired. All in all, a great
buffet. (Eileen speaking) I have to agree about the salad bar. But great crab legs
(cold or hot) and lots of good shrimp made up for it. Another buffet I'll be
taking the kids to after the shark reef.

RESTAURANTS

TOP OF THE WORLD/Stratosphere Tower. JULY 4TH (Steve speaking)
I made these reservations months in advance to view the fantastic fireworks
display that the Stratopshere was to be putting on. The reservations were for
9:30 so we could combine the beautiful Las Vegas sunset with the fireworks that
the reservationist told me was at 10 P.M. We arrived at the elevators at 9:15
as we were told to do...just in time to hear the last of the fireworks going
off that started at 9 P.M. not at 10 P.M. as we were told.

As usual, I had to say a prayer as we ascended rapidly up the tower to the
restaurant. As soon as we got their, my fear of heights kicked in and I started
getting shaky. We were seated at the upper level of the restaurant which was
fine by me, a window seat would have been a death blow. We were also seated by
a cooking station so we could hear all the orders being relayed (shouted) to
the chefs. We had a wonderful team of servers and a great view of all the OTHER
fireworks throughout Las Vegas.

(Eileen speaking) While we would have loved to have seen the Strat's
fireworks, it was wonderful sitting there and seeing fireworks throughout the whole
valley. Very nice!

(Steve speaking) As previously mentioned, Eileen and I got the same entree,
the free range chicken which was very good. The funniest thing about the dinner
was the three people dining below us. It appeared to us to be a man, a
daughter and her son. The man was Russian and the daughter and the son were French.
They did not understand each others language and it was hysterical watching
the man try to communicate with the waitress and the other two people. They
finally, after 20 minutes placed the order with the waitress. The young boy fell
asleep at the table and never ate anything.

I really like this restaurant but be prepared to spend a lot of gambling
money. Our bill with the tip was over $140.00 and we didn't order the expensive
items or cocktails. There is an additional $7.00 charge per item if you want
side orders of potatoes or vegetables. Is it worth the price? I guess so, I have
been there three times.

EMBERS at The Imperial Palace. (Steve speaking)
Truly one of Las Vegas' hidden treasures. Embers remains one of the best
Steakhouses in Las Vegas and by far, the most reasonably priced gourmet room in
all of Las Vegas. A small, intimate room reminiscent of the older Las Vegas, the
room is all redwood with both booths and tables.

The diversified menu has a little of everything on it so you won't have any
problem making a selection. The service was excellent and the food as always
was fantastic.
Our bill was under $50 for the entire meal. I give the restaurant a 9 out of
ten approval rating.
On my last trip to Las Vegas I had a conversation with the I.P.'s restaurants
manager and I told him the only thing wrong with Embers was the appetizer
list which contained almost all seafood entree's and not one beef or chicken one.
He said he would bring that point up at the next staff meeting and to look
for a change forthcoming. There was none and that was a little disappointing.
All in all, Embers is a wonderful dining experience.

(Eileen speaking) At the end of the meal you get a huge delicious chocolate
covered strawberry - if you have room for it!

NOODLES at The Mirage (Steve speaking)
I was really in the mood for a large bowl of Chinese noodle soup so Eileen
and I decided to try this place. To my surprise, their wasn't really a large
selection of soups, only about 10. The menu had a lot of Dim Sum, Rice and
regular Chinese food on it. Eileen ordered the Chicken with Broccoli which she said
was very good. I was set on noodle soup so I ordered the noodle soup with
beefballs. That term made me cringe but I ordered it anyway. Now I can't honestly
say what the beefballs were but I think my sperm count and testosterone level
went up 100%.
(Eileen speaking) At least I had a good laugh here! The food was very good
but the service wasn't. It was slow and we weren't offered any tea or desserts.
But Steve's food was interesting...

(Steve speaking) Prices were a little steep but it is a hotel restaurant. I
give it an average rating.

Restaurant Italiano at The Riviera. (Steve speaking)

Tucked away in the back of the Riviera is a wonderful Italian restaurant
simply called Restaurant Italiano. It is among the top 5 Italian restaurants in
Las Vegas. Host David Gross at your beckon call and will go out of his way to
see that your meal is a pleasant experience. The think I like best about this
place is that David is constantly changing the menu and experimenting with new
and innovative foods. The service is attentive and prompt. The food speaks for
itself......excellent! (Eileen speaking) I decided to go a little different
here and had the ravioli which was wonderful. I also had the spinach salad with
warm dressing, which they prepare at your table. Excellent!

Here is just a small sample of their extensive menu:
Mozzarella con Pomodoro e Basilico $10.95
Fresh Golden Fried Mozzarella Cheese Topped with Diced Plum Tomatoes, Virgin
Olive Oil and Basil.

Insalata di Spinaci $8.95
Fresh Spinach Topped with Warm Dressing. Prepared tableside and will attract
a lot of attention.

Minestrone Genovese $6.95
Italian Vegetable Broth Laced with Pesto. The best I ever had.

Combinazione di Pasta $16.50
Please Select One Pasta and Sauce Combination

Pesto - Basil, Garlic, Parsley, Parmesan and Pine Nuts with virgin olive oil

Bolognese - Ground Pork, Veal & Beef Cooked in Tomato Sauce

Pomodoro - Fresh Chopped Italian Tomatoes, Basil & Butter

Marinara - Italian Tomatoes Cooked Slowly with Garlic, Fresh Herbs & Spices

Spaghetti -- Fettuccini -- Penne -- Cheese Ravioli
Add Italian Sausage or Meat Balls $3.95
Lasagna $17.95
Special Homemade Four Cheese & Three Meat Lasagna
Fettuccini Alfredo $16.50. Fettuccini with a Sweet Cream Parmesan Sauce
Add Chicken $19.50
Add Shrimp $22.50

(I had the Spaghetti with meatballs in a Pomodoro sauce. The sauce was not
what I expected it to be but still was sooooo good.)

House Favorites

Gamberi con Limone & Aglio $27.95
Shrimp Scampi with Lemon and Garlic Sauce Entrecote Griglia $29.95
A 12oz. mid-western New York Steak Brushed with Garlic and smothered with
Sautéed Mushrooms. Also available Pizzaiola style, a Spicy Marinara Sauce and
Melted Mozzarella Cheese. Carre Di Agnello $29.95
New Zealand Rack of Lamb oven roasted and laced with a Tarragon Demi-Glaze
Filetto Gorganzola $28.95
Broiled 8 oz. Filet drizzled with a Gorganzola Demi Glaze Australian Lobster
Tail Fra Diavolo $32.95
8 oz. Sauteed Lobster Tail in a spicy Marinara Sauce, Served with your choice
of Pasta or House Potato.

Pollo Parmigiana $20.95
Breaded Breast of Chicken Sautéed in Butter Topped with Marinara Sauce,
Parmesan Cheese and Melted Mozzarella Cheese.

Scallopini di Vitello alla Piccata $28.95
Veal Scallopini Sautéed in butter, Mushrooms, White Wine and Lemon.

Salmone con Pomodoro e Basilico $25.95
Broiled Salmon Topped with a Marinade of Fresh Chopped Roma Tomatoes, Basil
and Olive Oil.

As you can see, prices are in the moderate range but still very reasonable.

This is an outstanding restaurant and you can hear the people at the other
tables rave about the food. Try it, you'll like it.

Everything Las Vegas Members Corner

Please feel free to submit anything Vegas related to me at mrvegas98@aol.com
for inclusion into the Members Corner newsletter. It can be a Trip Report, A
show, hotel or restaurant review. A comment on an article that appears in the
newsletter. A "tip" to other newsletter members or a question that you might
have.

Hey Steve,
Just got back from Vegas Mar 6th - 15th. Trip went very well. All hotels
were booked for race week so had to spend one night in Laughlin. 93 miles from
McCarran airport but a nice trip and was profitable also. Stayed at the
Stardust for 2 nights and Fitzgeralds for 4 nights. In the mornings would walk over
to the Westward Ho and get our .05 coffee and .25 Donuts.
Rechecked some old Buffet's and found Main Street Station ( try there Oxtail
and pulled pork) and The Gold Coast Buffets still very good and reasonable in
price. The Texas Station Buffet has greatly improved over the last couple
times we have been there but the best had to be Sams Town buffet with Filet Minion
and New York Strip Steak (Wed Nights). Best keep secret's we found this trip
were the ElCortez Breakfast 1.75 and across from Texas Station was a small
Casino called Wildfire. If you find do try there Bar-B-Que ribs for Around $6.99.
They were great and a lot better than Tony Romas. We were bumped from our
plane and put up at Terribles for 2 nights. The Rooms were excellent with the
exception of putting anouther couple in our room. What a shock that was but we
got it all straitened out. The Roasted chicken at $4.99 was excellent and if you
have a big hunger for ice cream order there banana split. You'll love it.
Checked out the Westin and for joining there player club they give you $10.00
to play. I turned mine into $83.00. They have refurbished the old Maxim and
done a great job with it. It's small and sort of quiet if you want to get away
from the loud casinos. Had some significant wins at the
Palms, Caesar's Palace (surprising selection of $0.25 9/6 JOB VP - clued in by
Yahoo VP Free) and Barbary Coast so I came back way up (for me, about $800).

Other places I enjoyed playing at were Tuscany, The Westin (old Maxim) and
Palace Station.

I wonder if any of your readers (or you) would be willing to post other
places that offer cheap games on the strip. I
saw in your most recent newsletter that 'The Flamingo always seems to have $5
tables'. That hasn't been my experience but I'll definitely take a closer look
next time I'm in town (hopefully September for our anniversary). We used some one pass
miles on Continental and upgraded to first class. What a nice way to go!!!!
We were booked at the Mirage and our friends at the Venetian.
Well, as many of you know the Bellagio was without power from Sunday to Wed.
This caused crowding at our hotel since many guests were moved there. There
were lines everywhere and no seats at the pool. Luckily we could go to the
Venetian's pool since our friends were there. Hubby did save seats one morning at
7:30 at our pool.
We decided to eat differently this trip and really enjoyed it. The first
night we ate at Bertolini's in the Forum Shop area. My husband had chicken
parmeghian to die for, and I had shrimp in a marinara sauce. Next night we had Angus
hamburgers in the Burger Bar and Grill in Mandalay Bay. Excellent burgers with
many toppings to choose from. The third night we ate at The Palms in
Caesar's. My husband had a delicious steak and I had a 3 pound lobster. Very noisy
place but food was good. The waiters were all practically kissing the ring of a
customer who came in with a big group! The last night we ate at Spago's in the
Forum. We started in the back and realized we wanted the cafe-no goose liver
for me. Homemade pastas were great as was the ice cream. My husband insulted the
waiter by asking him what brand the ice cream was (homemade of course). This
was our first time eating fancier meals, but we enjoyed it, especially when
our friend hit for $1000 one day on Wheel of Fortune and paid for the meal at
The Palms.
We did most of our gambling at the Imperial Palace. Dennis won $200 the first
night at 3 card poker and another $200 the next night at craps. I just kept
losing every night but having fun. The Legends Pit for blackjack is a lot of
fun-Rod Stewart, Cher, Elvis and Dolly Parton dealt to me. I played Hold Em
poker at the Mirage and Circus Circus. Won some, lost some. I did hit for $100 at
the airport, but overall we lost. One night we watched a drunk guy get taken
to his room in a wheel chair. He had gotten married that afternoon. His bride
thought it was so funny!!!!! Someone hit for $1 million on a penny Twightlight
Zone machine at the Imperial Palace. Gambling was interesting.
The weather was wonderful so we spent our days at the pool at the Mirage and
the Venetian. The water was actually warm. Overall we had a fun time as usual.
Just wish I could hit the big one. Maybe next trip!!!!!

i agree
i saw mac king last week in harrahs and loved him so much, he was great, best
thing in vegas too see.

Re: [Everythinglasvegas] Everything Las Vegas: Members Corner
<< Don't waste your money going there. The Indigo Lounge at Bally's is fun
because the entertainment is great and it's free! We had the opportunity to
see
Art Vargas there >>
Just a heads up, we returned yesterday from LV, and sadly discovered Art
Vargas is no longer playing at Bally's. I'm a
lowly Realtor, sorry no stations. But I'm quite serious, you could easily
turn your newsletter into an interesting & entertaining TV entertainment
news show. Besides the 33 million visitors who GO to Las Vegas, yearly,
there are another 66 million who wish they could. I find myself browsing
the Sunday Travel Section of the local paper almost every week, looking at
what's on in Vegas even though I might only go once or twice a year. Your
newsletter covers way more than our local paper ever would. Thank You-Keep
up the good work. - Vic

Westward-Ho
Hi Steve,This is my first time writing you about anything.I've been going to
Vegas for many years. The first year we stayed in a motel. After that 1st year
we've stayed at Circus/Circus, the Riviera, the last few years we've been
staying at the Westward-Ho. As you can see we stay at inexpensive hotel/casino'
s. I have no problems with inexpensive rooms, always clean, water and TV. And
since we receive a comp that makes it better. Westward-Ho would send us comps
for 4 free nights, 1 for my sister-in-law and 1 for my wife and myself. The
beginning of last year I had knee surgery. I booked 2 rooms at W-H for April, I
asked for rooms close to the casino because of my knee. I booked again for Sept.
and I asked for rooms close to the casino. When we arrived they gave my
sister-in-law a 1st room. They were giving me a room up stairs, I told them it's
hard for me to go up and down steps. They said there is an elevator, with my
complaining they gave me a ground floor room, and it was in the back near the
elevator, It was a long walk. I complained, it did no good. Every time I go I
stay 7 nights so I buy the extra nights. In the past the only thing I've asked
for was a fridge for medication. They sent comps again, Jan 2004 I called to
book 2 rooms up front. I was told I have to ask at check in time. I received a
room conformation in the mail it said rear room section, my sister-in-law's room
is in the front section. I emailed the W-H and explained about my knee, they
again said to request at check in. I faxed the W-H reservations manager and I
explained to her, all I was asking for was a ground floor room close to the
casino. They emailed me back and said "if I need handicap facilities they need a
fax from the doctor's office on his letterhead, noting wh at the medical
problem is and what type of handicap facilities I need. They only have a few rooms
that accommodate people with disabilities and need for them. She also wrote, "
Because we are a gaming property, we try to take care of our best customers
so we hold the front section for the people with the highest ratings." I wrote
back telling them, I never asked for a handicap room, I don't know if you
have a right to ask me to have my doctor fax my medical problem so everybody can
see it, you could have asked me to bring information at check in. Also the
doctor evaluated my knee with a 75% leg loss. I also filed a discrimination
charge with the ADA. She wrote back telling me I misunderstood what she said. I'm
going to Vegas 4/27/04 I don't know what will happen when I arrive at the
hotel. I haven't heard anything from the ADA or W-H since then.Thank You, Michael

Everything Las Vegas: Members Corner

Please feel free to submit anything Vegas related to me at mrvegas98@aol.com
for inclusion into the Members Corner newsletter. It can be a Trip Report, A
show, hotel or restaurant review. A comment on an article that appears in the
newsletter. A "tip" to other newsletter members or a question that you might
have.

Note:
As you can see by the dates on some of these contributions, I am backlogged
with Members Corner submissions.

Question: Would I be over-saturating my members with stuff to read if I sent
the Members Corner out every two weeks until I catch up? Or do I send them out
as Part One and Part Two on the regular schedule? Let me know.

Re: [Everythinglasvegas] Everything Las Vegas Members Corner
Compared to most trip reports I've read in your members corner, mine is very
belated but still one I wanted to share. My wife and I have been out to LV
three times over the last year but our trip just after Thanksgiving, 03' is
reported here.
We decided to take our 3 and 4 year old daughters to Vegas with us for the
first time. We (my wife) did a lot of online research as to the best hotel to
choose. We decided on The Orleans based on what we learned. It was a great
choice. We were there for five nights and took the girls somewhere special each
day. Went to Ethel M's factory one day, spent several hours at Circus Circus on
two occasions as they REALLY enjoyed the circus acts and Midway area. Took them
to several buffets, walked the strip, saw the sights, sounds, etc... My girls
are too young to play in the numerous video arcades but they still had an
absolute blast. We didn't gamble as much as usual but did get in alot of gaming on
Shifts, mostly at night while the girls were sleeping. One of us would stay
with them in our room while the other played.
The Orleans was wonderful. It was one of the rodeo weeks and the hotel was
very busy but the service was great. We ate in the buffet one night as well as
their cafe on several occasions ( the .99cent after midnight meals here were
great). I really enjoyed all my meals at the hotel. My wife was a little
dissapointed with her meal the night we did the buffet. It was steak night and they
couldn't get her steak done right and the rest of her meal "aged" while waiting
on the steak. The girls and I went bowling in the huge bowling alley there
one afternoon and then went for cook-to-order burgers just off the casino
afterwards. These too were very good.
Although we decided not to use it this time around because we just were not
comfortable leaving our youngest in a day-care enviroment-- The Orleans has a
fantastic facility where kids can play in a large, well supervised indoor
playground. They had what we felt was an excellent check-in, check-out system for
the children where no-one but the parent can access or remove the child from
the play area. Although not free, it had a reasonable hourly rate and discount
coupons were provided for this and most all hotel features at check-in. Notably
the play center had a maximum time limit also, per day. I believe it was 3
hours.Seemed like a good policy to me.
They also have a multi-screen movie theater and ice skating rink!!
The 4th night of our trip our 3 year old got a nasty stomach illness which
lasted about 36 hours. The 5th evening she decided she might try to eat
something but would not consider anything except a pb&j sandwich. This item does not
exist on any menu in this huge hotel including the room service menu. I
contacted the room service anyway, explained my problem and they quickly provided
exactly what I needed--enough stuff to make two sandwiches! Although I would
have paid anything for it they only charged me 2 bucks. Way below the minimum.
We always rent a car when in Vegas and always use the valets when we visit
different hotels. Unlike some strip locations The Orleans valet service was
ALWAYS fast and efficient no matter how busy they were. We never waited more than
a few minutes and a few times it seemed like only a minute or two.
So, cudos to The Orleans, from the valet to special request room
service--excellent. Pretty decent volume of casino waitresses. Lots of bars. A huge
casino. Oh, and 24 hour security at the bank of room elevators. No room key -- no
access to Tower. I know this is common in a lot of places but it is
appreciated. A relative stayed at Ceasars during this same week and there was no security
at all going to their room.
Did unusually good (for me) gambling. Played alot of VP, blackjack and even
Wheel of Fortune slots. Usually play .25 cent games but was enough ahead to
play some 1.00 games this time. The morning we were to leave I hit $1000 spinning
the wheel on Wheel/Fortune. This was real exciting and capped of a great
trip.
Can't wait to go back...
Russ M.

Re: [Everythinglasvegas] Everything Las Vegas Members Corner
Dear Steve,

Spent five days in Vegas & the surrounding area in March. I like the
Silverton, but skip the buffet. This is home cookin' like Mom used to make, if your
Mom cooks out of a bad Betty Crocker cookbook and can't read the recipes. Went
to Primm and road the Desparado, billed as the worlds largest and fastest
roller coaster. My one word review:

"Mommeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!"

Very fast, very steep, a real blast. Even better when comped. Miss Ashleigh's
buffet at Buffalo's Bills in Primm is what the Silverton wants to be - solid
southern comfort food. I used a coupon from the tourist center to get a fun
book from Buffalo's to get the buffet and two rides comped. Log flume ride was
fun, too, but not so great that I would have paid for it. Not quite clear that
I got the usual book, maybe an upgraded one as they were out of the standard
book, if I understood the heavily accented lady at the slot club.

Stayed at night at the Gold Spike in Jean which claims to have better games
and looser slots - I wouldn't believe it based on my expreience.

Had trouble getting a room due to NASCAR weekend in LV and landed at the Wild
Wild West. Not a flea bag, but not really even Motel 6 quality, I am sorry to
say. Not even good VP in the smokey casino. Boys and Girls, just say no.

Met my nephew in LV to celebrate his 21rst birthday. Took him to the buffet
at Terribles - this is really a decent buffet although it has been much
maligned. Not a huge selection but everything was pretty good - make sure and try
some of the house specialty, the tequila lime marinated chicken, which was on the
buffet the day we were there, although it can be ordered in the coffee shop
as well.

Saw the Scintas for the second time - a great show and consistently good
performers. Laugh out loud funny, too. Got to see the upgraded Masquerade show in
the sky at the Rio and it is not only dazzling, but genuinely entertaining
now.

Had great food at Gardunos at the Palms, some very unconventional Mexican
food like the "house roast" - a seafood bisque with lobster, crab and shrimp that
is to die for. Also had a killer porterhouse. Skip the queso tho (this ain't
the real thang, cowboy) and save room for puffy sopapillas.

Spent the next two nights at the LV Hilton, which was wonderful as usual.
After bragging about the buffet my last two trips, they dissapointed me this
time. Guess it is hit and miss. New blackjack tables include electronic big
brother features that record your bets and count the discards! Scary!

Took my nephew to see the Freemont Street Experience which as of mid March
the improvements were still only one-third completed, but will be dazzling when
they finally install the 12.5 million new LED lights. The resolution and color
density of the new Experience will be jaw-dropping. Got a center table at
Center Stage Restaraunt in the Dome at the Plaza. Really nice to see the lights
from there. We had excellent salads and a decent sirloin and veal marsala.
Service is a bit slow but you want to take your time here and enjoy the view. They
turn down the lights and play the music of the Experience when the show comes
on. Pricey, but made better with a 50% off coupon from POV book from The LV
Advisor.

Two thumbs up for The Rick Thomas Magic Show. You get the showgirls and the
white tigers at an affordable price. This is probably the 4rth time I have seen
the show and it is always pretty good. Make sure to see the free show Airplay
while you are at the Trop.

Found some good 10/7 DB VP at the Four Queens and also enjoyed their cigar
bar. Play some bartop VP and get your microbrews comped and then sit in the
comfy chairs. My nephew Ben found it a perfect setting to fire up a stogie. Very
nice.

Finally got to see (and eat) at Main Street Station and now I see why
everybody raves about their buffets! It is also a genuinely beautiful hotel on par
with the Nugget.

My nephew and I played some bj at a really live table at the Lady Luck where
the players were laughing and cutting up with the dealer and even the pit boss
chimed in. Why can't it be more like this everywhere? Didn't hurt that the
dealer was busting pretty regular and helped pull me out of my slump.

Also my nephew had a good run of luck at the Golden Gate.

But it was the 10/7s DB at the classic El Cortez that brought me back from a
losing trip this time. (This is why my grandma came here for 60 years!) Quads
to the rescue! Even Elvis at the El "sang" to me in a bonus round. My nephew
and I had such a good time downtown we skipped a show our last night and just
kept playing.

Between coupons and comps, I think I paid for one drink and fewer than half
the delicious meals and awesome shows we did. Another great trip to Vegas,
where you can be entertained, wined and dined for peanuts and feel like a big
shot. My nephew Ben pronounced it his best birthday ever.

What a place.

- Gregg from Austin

TRIP REPORT
Steve,
Just got back from my stay at Ballys. Arrived on 3/9 and went to see The
Scintas that evening. What a great show! Thanks to a friend, we had seats right
at the stage.
Traveled on Jet Blue for the first time, a great flight and kudos for the
t.v.'s at each seat.
Too bad they don't have a direct flight from Dulles, the layover in Long
Beach really sucks.
They need to tear that airport down and build a new one.
Got great rooms thanks to my casino host Jed Francis. I booked 5 rooms for my
group and he arranged the first nite comped for all of us.
Played a little 3-card on Tues. nite and went to bed about $200 up.
Wed, had meetings during the day at the Riviera until around 4 PM. On the way
out, I stopped at the 3-card poker table and as I sat down, so did another
guy. The dealer asked him where he was from and he said "Buffalo, NY," the
couple next to him said "hey, we're from Buffalo too and they began discussing the
neighborhood they were from etc. Then the dealer asked me where I was from
and......well, I was born and raised in Buffalo, NY! now what are the odds of 4
people all from Buffalo at the same table at the same time, all sitting in a
row?!?! I thought that was a good sign! Hit a straight flush on my first hand
for $600
but ended up spending about $400 back trying to hit for more. The weather,
by the way was fantastic, 80's and sunny during the day and around high 60's at
night.(I'm gonna move there somday!!!!!)
Left the Riv after about an hour and headed back up to Ballys played a little
3-card and then went with a buddy to the Sahara for some Texas Hold-em. We
played until 2:30am and walked with about $100 more than I started with.
Thursday, went back to Sahara for a little more poker but played some 4-card
poker first.......lost my butt big time on that game. After making that
deposit (-$400) I decided to go down to Fremont Street and see if they did anything
special at Binions for the temporary closure. They wisely kept the lights on
both inside and out.
Had dinner at the Golden Nugget buffet, great food! What a classy joint!
They had a section in the pit roped off for filming a movie. If you didn't want
to be seen then they caution you to stay out of that area.
The new owners area very present there. I saw both Tom Breitling and Tim
Poster standing around the high stakes pit greeting patrons and friends just
like new parents would do with their new baby.
The new LED lighting is about 50% complete on the Fremont Street Experience
and is going to be really great, brighter and clearer.
Thursday nite was a trip to Jimmy Buffet's new restaurant at the Flamingo for
a Margarita (I actually bumped into this woman I know from back home, small
world huh?!) and then off to Harrahs. They have Boston 5 Card there and I had
quite a bit of luck there. I played at the table in the "party pit for about 4
hours and hit a few flushes and then a strait flush. Picked up around $250 to
the positive there.
Friday went to the I.P. to see when the dealer-tainers were gonna be there
and just had to stop at the 3-card poker table. Sat in 3rd base and on the
second hand hit 3 3's and picked up about $700. I wisely colored in right there and
then and went back to Ballys for lunch.
The I.P. is undergoing some renovations and is looking damn good. Glad to see
them do that!. I really like playing there and stayed there last March, had a
great time!

Now IM up around $1000.00 for my trip and I don't leave until Sat. nite.
Hope I can parlay it into more........not a good plan. Got a little crazy on
craps-lost. Got a little crazy on Let-
Em-Ride...... got taken for a ride. Went to roulette, put $10 on # 2 and
HIT. Colored in right after that.
Friday nite back to Fremont St. with friends and went to G.N. for a while,
Plaza, Fitz, then headed back up town. Went to Caesars for a few hours,,,,,damn
they are getting soooo big its gonna take an entire trip soon just to go
through it. Wish Elton was there but we just missed him, hopefully next trip.
Turned in early (2am) well, that's early for some people!
Had breakfast Sat. in Ballys Big Kitchen.....great food! I love that
buffet. Thought I'd check my Ballys connection card to see what comps I had accumulated (this is the first time that I have ever bothered to do it and usually by the time I go back, all the comps are gone)
and had $200 in comps so I decided to buy everyone (6) in our group breakfast and it counts as a line pass too! That was great cause it was real busy Sat. am.

The monorail still isnt running....that really sucks, I was really looking
forward to riding it.

We did some shopping for gifts after that and checked out. The bell hop kept our bags for us until we were ready to head to the airport (sad, sad, sad).
As though we hadn't had enough, we began playing the slots at the airport.
One of my group hit 500 quarters within minutes, another hit 600 both on wheel of fortune, a I hit for about 350 (got a few 4 of a kinds).
But, then It was time.....Back to reality. Ended up around $300 up for the
entire trip.
Cant wait to return.......perhaps in May!?

Good Luck on your next visit and KEEP UP THIS GREAT SITE! There are
THOUSANDS who apprieciate all you do.

Rusty

Elton John, Hugo's Cellar & Aladdin
Just wanted to drop you a quick email to tell you about our trip to Vegas
this week. It was PACKED, as if it were a weekend and we are being told it has been like this most of the time now. I am still wondering how, if the economy is so "bad," all of these people can afford to go! Also, the new monorail is not working yet, but it is all ready to go. Maybe next week...

In case anyone hasn't already mentioned it, Elton John's performance at
Caesar's Palace is, well, different. Let's put it this way: If you want to go to and see a show with lots of bare breasts and sexual innuendo, yet you don't want anyone to know you did, go see Elton John in Las Vegas! As a young, 34-year old who is pretty darn liberal regarding such things, even I was shocked!

The music is truly wonderful and Elton still "has it," so it puzzled me that he
would go such extremes as he did with this show. Between the VERY
distracting videos playing across the entire back of the stage, including Pamela Anderson pole-dancing in a G-string and pasties, to a dramatic dance between a man and a woman in which we saw way more than dancing, to the inflatable (and very sexually suggestive) fruit he had on stage (a banana and two cherries on either side, to give you an idea of one set), the production seemed more provocative than "Midnight Fantasy" at the Luxor. Oh yes, and I cannot forget to mention the inflatable breasts that hang above the audience and eventually shoot streamers out of, well, I am sure you can fi
