VIEW 'POWER OF VIDEO"

[MAY 11, 2007 - LAS VEGAS - VEGAS BUZZ NEWS] - Vegas Buzz started out as a small independent news service based on the relatively simple quest to find a simple way to post articles and photos to the Internet. This was back in 2002, way before blogs and podcasts were part of the public consciousness.

Of course this was also way before Web Video came on the scene.  And we're talking about only 30% or less people with broadband at that time.  I myself had just sold a dial-up ISP. Who'da thought cable would become such a major force in the Internet business? It made too much sense, when you think about it, which is probably why it took a while.

Citizen Media. Desktop TV production. What it all means.

Big corporations are still trying to figure out this Internet 'video thing.'

They'll never have it figured out as long as big greedy corporations are insensitive to the public and even their own customers.  Who answers information request forms? Reminds me of one of my old cartoons about a  'Suggestion Box' that goes to a dumpster on the other side of a wall.  Smiling employees walk away thinking they are about to make a difference.

While the big corporation executives huddle over how to use video, their own customers are showing them how.

Pretty much like how fans will tape interviews or parts of a concert and post the video to YouTube and other video sites.

For anyone with a product or service to sell, including themselves, video is truly the way.

A video I produced nearly 20 years ago, is surprisingly relevant, especially today.  You can see it here - It's called "The Power of Video"

Anyone in the video business should definitely show this video to their customers. Twenty years ago or more, the only uses people had for video was to time shift television program viewing, just as video rentals became all the rage.  Not many people thought about making a video to sell a product, their company or themselves.  This is still true to some extent today.  Just like people hedged on creating websites, the current wave of hedging, or 'fence sitting,' revolves around video.  Whether to create one or not.  People once thought they didn't need a website. Guess what? Not only does everybody need a website, they also need a video.  People who enjoy talking will find they are better served doing it on video, or better yet, showing it, on video.  Massive amounts of information can be conveyed instantaneously to our brains, visually, through our eyes, as this is our predominant mode of gaining information about things.  We all know most people don't like to read or listen to anybody else talking. But a video can make a powerful case.

The ability to create a video on your desktop and then upload it to YouTube, Google Video, Yahoo Video, or any of the thousands of video sites out there with a potential viewing audience of millions, is truly remarkable.

Distribution = Wealth.

"Distribution creates wealth," as many of the money mavens of our time say.

Still, the biggest problem with a video of course, and most products can be summed up in the one word: "Distribution."

Information Evolution.  The revolution is being televised.

The tide has turned, though. This time the 'peasants' are making and distributing the videos. Bad news for the media royalty!

Corporate Conundrum. The writing on the wall.

Large corporations like GM, are actually asking their media companies and advertising agencies to be more creative.  Translate their ads into other language versions of the same newspaper, for example.  Harness the power of bloggers. Simple, but overlooked.  They've even gotten into podcasting, and Video-On-Demand. Obvious, but overlooked. As I often say, 'We overlook the obvious."

In the next article in this series, I'll talk about the power of 'viral video marketing.'
