Dr. Susan Stafford Honored as Amazing Woman of Inspired Action
Breaking new ground for women in TV
game shows, Susan Stafford is perhaps best known as the original hostess on Merv
Griffin’s “Wheel Of Fortune” on NBC.
Becoming the first woman to get a microphone placed Susan among the top
10 highest paid women on TV at the time.
Susan was the first woman to get an Emmy nomination on a game show which
gave women new recognition.
After almost 8 years, Susan chose to leave the show, just when it was going nighttime to follow her dreams and her heart to work with terminal cancer patients in Houston. Long before it was fashionable for celebrities to care about problems overseas, Susan made documentaries on leprosy work with former Surgeon General Koop in Ethiopia, Brazil, the Philippines and Africa. She also worked with Mother Teresa’s nuns in India. Returning to America, she came face to face with “America’s leprosy” when she cared for her dear friend, Rock Hudson and was privileged to do his funeral.
At the age of 40,
Susan went back to college and received a master’s in Theology and a Ph.D. in
Psychology. Dr. Susan was honored with
the World Unity Award along with Martin Luther King, III and Edward James
Olmos.
Serving with the
Emergency Response team of Media Fellowship International, Dr. Susan counseled
survivors during heavy crisis times at Columbine, Virginia Tech and Israel.
You will learn much more about this amazing lady in Dr. Susan's book, "Stop The Wheel, I Want To Get Off" which will be released this Fall.

70 countries around. Recognizing that women and girls make up 70 percent of the
poorest people in the world today, CARE places special emphasis on working with
women to create permanent social change. Women are at the heart of CARE’s
community-based efforts to improve basic education, prevent the spread of HIV,
increase access to clean water and sanitation, expand economic opportunity and
protect natural resources.
HISTORY: The
celebration of Amazing Woman’s Day was first established nearly a decade
ago by Marsh Engle. As the activities,
programs and outreach of the Amazing Woman initiative has expanded
over the years, the core mission remained the same: To
serve as a unifying symbol of women everywhere who wish to bring a sense of
value and purpose to their life, their community and the world. It
was in March, 2001 that women throughout the nation first joined to establish
the Amazing Woman’s Day initiative by joining in ten cities
throughout the United States. In 2002 the celebration grew to 50 cities and
was awarded a United States Congressional Proclamation that established
Amazing Woman’s Day as a nationwide grassroots initiative to celebrate
the creative power of women everywhere. Since that time, Amazing Woman's
Day has served to inspire thousands across the nation.
