Present Their “40th Anniversary Celebration Show”
[Las Vegas, August 18, 2008 - Vegas Buzz News Network] ]Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr. are currently touring with their “40th Anniversary Celebration Show.” The show celebrates the couple’s 40-year career in show business and almost 40-years of marriage. It is a musical tribute to the hits and productions that have made up their multi-faceted careers and will include various flavors of R&B, Gospel, Jazz and Pop that have influenced them over the years.
McCoo and Davis first met when they were both members of The 5th Dimension in 1965. During their tenure with the rock group, the two helped The 5th Dimension reach legendary status. The duo has enjoyed tremendous success through the years as recording artists, performers and authors. They have received 7 Grammy Awards and earned 15 gold and 3 platinum records, and enjoyed starring roles on television and stage. They have performed to sold-out concerts around the world.
Of course, the show will include plenty of hits from The 5th Dimension such as “Never My Love,” “Stone Soul Picnic,” “Up, Up & Away,” “Aquarius/Let The Sun Shine In,” “Wedding Bell Blues” and “One Less Bell to Answer.”
“When it comes to presenting music from The 5th Dimension, it was really important for us to attempt to recreate the original harmonies of the group to the best of our abilities. It was the original harmonies that made us stand out when we first began. We have always been proud of its uniqueness,” McCoo comments.
“After the death of Ron Townson and the retirement of Lamonte McLemore, we realize that it will be impossible to ever duplicate the sound again through a reunion of the original members, however, we have tried to come as close as possible,” adds Davis.
McCoo and Davis decided to leave The 5th Dimension after a decade and establish themselves as a duo. They had immediate success with the single, “You Don’t Have To Be A Star (To Be In My Show).” It was a #1 hit and earned them a Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Performance By a Duo or Group.
In addition to the success they’ve had together, Marilyn & Billy have also enjoyed solo pursuits. McCoo hosted the popular 1980’s television music series, “Solid Gold,” for 5 years and Davis had the chance to realize a lifelong dream to record a religious album with gospel great, the Rev. James Cleveland. McCoo fulfilled one of her lifelong ambitions by appearing on Broadway in the revival of the musical Show Boat, starring in the role of Julie. Davis’ theatrical accomplishments includes starring roles Blues in the Night and the hit musical Dreamgirls.
The material chosen for the “40th Anniversary Celebration Show” draws from all of these aspects of their careers. They will also perform some selections from their new interactive music CD, The Many Faces of Love, released in March 2008. The Many Faces of Love is a collection of meaningful love songs that came from their era of the '60s and '70s. With almost 39 years of marriage under their belts, who better to expound on “the many faces of love.” The CD's unique interactive features include videos, interviews, bonus songs, rare photos, links and more, all accessible through ones computer.
In 2004 the couple wrote a critically applauded book, which shares their secrets of staying happy and committed to each other in Hollywood. It’s entitled Up, Up and Away…How We Found Love, Faith and Lasting Marriage in the Entertainment World.
“We have learned that our music is a mutual experience that we have been fortunate to share. We are gratified by the audience participation as they are reminded of possibly kinder, gentler times,” Davis sums up. “We are so thankful that we have been able to realize the dream that we had from our youth to have a career in music and to enjoy so many levels of success. We want to feature some of those highlights in the 40th Anniversary Celebration Show.”
