The nation's wireless carriers, including AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile, and their primary trade association and Republican leaders in Congress are all opposing an FCC proposal that would put free wireless broadband in the hands of consumers.

A little-noted July 25 deadline for comments is looming at the Federal Communications Commission. At stake is a plan by FCC Chairman Kevin Martin that would combine two spectrum blocks for auction and require the winning licensee to offer free broadband service to 50 percent of the United States within four years and 95 percent of the country within 10 years.

Under Martin's plan, the winning bidder would build an advertising-supported network that would filter out pornography on the free-access part of the network. In addition, the FCC wants to impose an open access requirement on the spectrum, allowing any device or software to plug into the network.

MORE

</rss:item><rss:item rdf:about="http://vegasnews.squarespace.com/wireless-media-news/2008/4/8/vegas-strip-using-nextwave-state-of-the-art-wi-fi-infrastruc.html"><rss:title>Vegas Strip Using Nextwave State-of-the-Art Wi-FI Infrastructure Solutions</rss:title><rss:link>http://vegasnews.squarespace.com/wireless-media-news/2008/4/8/vegas-strip-using-nextwave-state-of-the-art-wi-fi-infrastruc.html</rss:link>

<dc:subject></dc:subject>

Vegas Strip Using Nextwave State-of-the-Art Wi-FI Infrastructure Solutions

More Capacity, Less Interference Key to Superior User Experience and Profitable Wi-Fi Business Model
Las Vegas, March 31, 2008 – NextWave Wireless Inc. (NASDAQ: WAVE), a global provider of mobile multimedia and wireless broadband technologies, today announced that Cheetah Wireless Technologies, Inc., a wireless mesh network solutions provider, has upgraded its Las Vegas broadband Wi-Fi infrastructure with NextWave’s state-of-the art MBW 2000 series micro cell and MBW 1000 series pico cell base stations, offering improved mobile wireless connectivity along the Las Vegas Strip – both inside and outside the world’s largest casinos, hotels and convention centers. Together, NextWave and Cheetah Wireless will offer Las Vegas’ mobile population improved portable indoor/outdoor Wi-Fi accessibility via an innovative, unique brand-supported business model.

NextWave’s pico cell base stations – powered by its innovative xRF™ adaptive beamforming smart antenna technology – provide Cheetah the capacity to offer multiple high-quality user access channels to its network, including Cheetah Wireless’ own tiered service levels, as well as third-party branded service offerings. The branded service option offers a retail service provider, such as a hotel or a campus landlord, the opportunity to use their brand as the entry point to Cheetah Wireless’ network and supply content for a privately-branded landing page, with the company sponsoring Wi-Fi access service. This model provides the retail service providers with the opportunity to serve the massive population of Las Vegas tourists and business travelers looking for Wi-Fi connectivity, and attracts more users to Cheetah’s network.

NextWave’s xRF™ technology dramatically increases signal penetration through the Las Vegas Strip’s dense steel and glass high rise structures, providing broadband capacity to connect more users per node than any other Wi-Fi based carrier class solution, and enabling the success of Cheetah Wireless’ network.

“NextWave’s access points have made it possible to reach further into buildings and cover more area, so we have doubled and, in some cases, tripled users on certain units,” said Mitchell Gonzalez, president and founder of Cheetah Wireless. “Our network offers mobility to users, so they can have high-quality Wi-Fi inside and outside hotel rooms, casinos and convention center floors with one access plan. Our new branded service model offers companies a way to use their own content and offer lower prices for consumers – a winning combination.”

Cheetah Wireless has currently completed the first phase of the installation using NextWave MBW 2000 series micro cell base stations, featuring dual-radio 802.11 b/g access, and MBW 1000 pico cell base stations, with single-radio 802.11 b/g access on light poles and rooftops around the Las Vegas Strip for a two and a half square mile indoor and outdoor Wi-Fi umbrella stretching from Russell Rd (south) to Flamingo Rd in Clark County, Nevada. Soon, users will have access to portable Wi-Fi along the entire Las Vegas Strip – an advantage over other businesses that offer Wi-Fi service at stationary locations only. Cheetah Wireless has already purchased additional base stations for the second phase of its network build-out to expand coverage adding an additional two square miles by mid year 2008.

“The superior performance capabilities of our Wi-Fi equipment with increased range of coverage and mesh networking, minimizes the total cost of ownership and operations, further enabling service providers like Cheetah Wireless to offer innovative services and build a profitable business,” said Dr. William Jones, CEO of NextWave Wireless’ Network Products division. “We are excited to be working with Cheetah Wireless on this innovative approach to Wi-Fi access, and we are looking forward to expanding the network together.”

About NextWave Wireless

NextWave Wireless Inc. Others with the automaker said other technologies, including satellite, are also being considered.

Wi-Max works in a similar manner to a Wi-Fi connection at a coffee shop, but instead of only working in a limited geographic space, Wi-Max could potentially operate any where you can receive a cell phone signal.

Klegon said such technology will resonate with the connected consumer.

"Anything you do on your home computer, you could do in your car," he said.

Wireless phone companies are working on fourth-generation mobile Internet technology, and Klegon said it's likely Chrysler would work with several providers.

The high-speed Internet access could allow Chrysler to tap into some features that its competitors tout.
